Look at the recent copies of western songs.
Almoner - X-Men totally rips off Toxic by Brittany
Kiss Kiss - Mina is a complete bite of Kiss Kiss by Holly Valance
Funky Town - Kim Hyun Jung is a rip off of Lips Inc/Pseudo Echo
 - One, Two is a rip off of Will Smiths Switch
  - ü is a rip off of Kylie Minouge cant get you out of my head.
The list could go on and on.... but the Kiss Kiss one really pissed me off when I saw it today. When will they learn, get original people. If its not the music, its the video, the dance whatever.
Don't worry I know there is decent Korean music out there, but people making money off other peoples hard work without the proper recognition shits me.
Now if they would also creddit all the samples they used in their music like the rest of the world. |

| Asians seem to have major intellectual property issues, particularly Chinese and Koreans. They don't lose any sleep over ripping off other name brands, etc. |

yeah...my students are always surprised that I know the harmony and hooks to all their stupid pop songs.
at least in the us when puff daddy steals a melody...we KNOW its a remix. Here they just assume that its funky Korean rhythm at work...
anyway, whatever..im quite unsure if anything from pop culture is authentic here...everything seems borrowed from the west (mostly US) and Japan. |

Aside from pop music, hip-hop and house music steal and sample all the time, just because most people who hear something can spot the Steve Windwood sample or whatever, it doesn't make the artist any more original.
Do the kids who buy Westlife know they weren't the first people to record "Uptown Girl"? I doubt it.
That Holly Valance record is a beautiful example. It is a direct rip from a turkish pop song by a guy called Tarkan, also released as "La muchacha turca" in Spanish, "Zene Vole Dijamante" in Serbian etc. etc.
Often if a song isn't a hit for one artist, moguls will wait a year or so, give it to a different boy band or fit girl, and try it again. Happens everywhere |

What? I thought those were all originals... Then again, I thought Koreans invented music at the same time they invented the radio that goes in the car that they also invented...
My bad. |

Benjamin Britten. My mother can't stand him though. |

| Does anyone have links to these in mp3 or clip format? Can you say for sure that royalties haven't been paid? It wouldn't surprise me if they haven't, but I am curious. Oh yeah, and while we are on the subject, that song 'music is my life', is it just me or does it sound remotely like 'Ain't no mountain high enough'? |

John Rutter. My best friend studied with his wife, and another friend of mine had a close friendship (and who knows what else) with his late son (RIP). |

artists here don't pay for samples and they generally don't put them in their liner notes.
Im mates with DJ Soulscape and he was saying its really difficult and too expensive for most labels to follow through with clearing samples. and as they don't think they'll get major sales or o/s recognition they don't clear them |

| Just out of curiousity, when does a sample become a blatant rip-off? |

Or lets add John Adams... probably famous for "Nixon in China" opera. However his short piece "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" is quite popular with symphonies. One of the few modern pieces of classical music to make into symphonic heavy rotation. "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" is wonderful, probably the most effective use of the wood block since the Live at Leeds rendition of Magic Bus.
I like Britten's War Requiem. Damn powerful work, especially if seen live. Rutter has that wonderful piece of Christmas music "What sweeter things" or something that was co-opted for a Volvo commercial or something.
And then there is that classic line from Four Hands Two Pianos where the guy is being tested... asked to name composers by nationality. The proctor asks him to name a Canadian composer. He thinks a moment and says "Shaffer". The Proctor is like "what?" "Shaffer, Paul Shaffer". |

Zuh?
Not only does the CD say "Dance Remake Album", but in the credits of the CD liner it clearly says that it's a remake of Steven Greenberg's "Funky Town" and produced under permission of Warner/Cahppell Music Inc.
Now say you're sorry to the little princess. |

well thats a first, thats pretty impressive. I remember Drunken Tiger stole a complete beat for their first album, from Camp Lo.
Samples, when reworked, I dont consider rip offs. Im not sure of the specifics, but its either down to time or bars, once it goes over a specific limit its no longer a sample. |
