I was thinking the same thing. Two woeful games in a row, lucky to win against Wales and an utter shambles against the Northern Irish, who it should be said, deserved a win. If he doesn't go now, nothing short of direct qualification and at least a semi final berth in Germany will suffice. |

Typical English! They always think that they have a chance to go well in the world cup (and sometimes win it) but they always end up with egg on their face. Every guy that I met from there is saying that they will win the cup next year and I always say to them that 1966 was a long time ago. Bloody delighted that they lost.
But I'm not delighted that we lost to France too. |

Typical paddy, the bulk of your sporting glory comes in the form of schadenfraude at the expense of the English. Get over it mate, we left your country 80 odd years ago.
BTW, I hope that France and Switzerland go through. |

I don't think there's much to gain from sacking any manager that has two bad games (well, three if you count Denmark). It's just over-reaction.
At the very least we should wait until after the next two games in October- if we don't qualify then he'll be out, no question, but I still don't see that happening. |

Speaking as a Northern Irish man I would say England need to buck up their game because Northern Ireland are ONE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN THE WORLD!!! |

Poor manager selections... team didn't want it... players out of position...
...
oh, *beep* it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
2-1 to us last night, and that after the draw with Italy - qualification isn't in our hands but our hopes are still alive |

How about the last time that Ireland and England played a friendly game and our lad scored (David Kelly I think) and then the frigging English went beserk and had to shipped home? That's not 80 years is it mate?
We don't take the sport too seriously like you do and thank God that we don't. Anyway let's not fight, it's only a game.
On another note, I don't think that you should sack Sven 'cas that could mess up the team a lot. I say stick with him and hopefully all will be fine. If you get a new manager then he could mess around with the team too much. That's my two cents anyway. |

Truth be told, they'd have been better off sacking him about 3 years ago when it truly mattered. You want some more truth? Most Brits know that their team is overrated at best, so any disappointment doesn't come as much of a surprise. Besides which, Korea sacked Bonfrere (or he 'quit'; whichever one you happen to believe) and you check and see how much good that will do them.
I've always said England lacked the balls to make it through any major competition--ditto Holland--they've got a good deal of individually talented players, but no team cohesion.
In the last WC, both Brazil and Germany had relatively easy roads to follow, but nobody gets to choose their opponents. England had nothing in their tank from the get-go.
And what's with that little arse Rooney? He's gonna wind up with more yellow cards than pounds before he's done. Couldn't anybody write the little bastard into some anger management clause on his contract?
All that being said, my boys barely got through against Kaz--I think Denmark will give them a good pasting when the time comes. I don't want to admit it, but I think we're done for. |

Northern Ireland even lost to Canada
England should rebound against Austria. Poland will be a very telling match.
It looks highly unlikely now that they will take their group. My guess is that they will be headed to the playoff round.
Its hard to imagine them not being in Germany next year. |

I was just having a pop because you did. I never said I expected to win the WC, as you implied, simply that Sven should be set a minimum standard in order to retain the multi-million pound post.
You also brought up the abandoned game some time ago. Sad stuff it was and I was totally ashamed that a terrorist group (combat 1 were allowed to cause such an offence abroad. Less spoken on this issue the better I think.
I actually like to see all the home nations and the Republic do well in the qualifiers and the WC. I watched the game with a mate this morning who comes from Belfast. We shook hands at the end of the game. As you said its only a game. Still, when Irish mates get snooty about the England team it doesn't endear me to their cause. After all, most of your boys ply their trade across the channel and it makes the game all the more enjoyable.
Anyhow, you are right, its just a game, all the best for the remaining qualifiers. |

There's definitely something awry in the English camp. With all the talent at their disposal they should be beating teams like N. Ireland comfortably (no offence to any N Irish fans )
But the manager is ultimately responsible for the results of the team. Sven has, it seems, got it totally wrong in playing the new formation, as has been made evident by the last few games. By refusing to drop Beckham for Sean Wright Phillips and changing the formation of the team to incorporate both players, Sven has undone all the preparation of the past few years. The players are now been asked to play unfamiliar roles in an unfamiliar system too close to the WC finals. Just look at the performances of Gerrard and Lampard against Wales and N Iron.
I still think England will make it to Germany 2006 but they may have to endure the play-offs at this stage. Even then they're probably only good enough for a quarter-final berth. Is that worth Sven's salary of 4.5m sterling per year? |
