Can anyone with inside knowledge of the workings of this site kindly take a moment to explain why it operates so poorly?
Why do we have to deal with this so frequently:
phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database
I never encounter that anywhere else.
Why does this site often open threads painfully slowly when every other site I visit is all but instant?
Earlier today the forums were inaccessible but the job boards were up in all their glory. I take that as an insult to the regular visitors who have helped build this place into what it is.
Its seriously offputting. What gives? |

The traffic is higher than the server can handle. Dave needs to invest in a new server or upgrade the current one. |

Dave is doing a research study based on low frustration and teachers in Korea. |

I get the message a number of times per day. The problem could easily be solved if Dave were to use a spare computer as an extra server. Or maybe the guys from the Logical Language Group would like to host it for free. I'm sure they'd love the publicity. Would probably contrast with an ESL cafe but if you're going to go cheap on hosting you work with the options you have, not the ones you wish you had.

Here's an example of a board that has a proper server.
http://www.aog.2y.net/forums/
And it's taken me six minutes so far to load up this page to say that. Let's press submit and hope it takes under five. |

That's because it has its own server, just a computer that sits around to take access requests all day. Buy your own server once and you have a blindingly fast board forever, as long as your site isn't super huge. |

It's fact that the job bits rarely if ever go down. Why is that? Because that is how Sir Sperling can afford his jetsetting life of fast cars, faster women, ocean going yachts, Armani berets and expensive rolex watches |

Turns out the slowdown is on account of an upgrade in the works. |

Yes, well as usual, we aren't told anything. The board was down half the day last Sunday. A thread arose asking what happened. No expanation. How about some respect and answering the reasonable questions of the board users? This is the sort of thing that is really a problem here.
How about, after the board goes down, a sticky for a few days acknowledging and explaining the problem? Ditto the frequent slow downs and inaccessability lately.
Respect for the users, is that too much to ask? |
