Canadians Beat U.S. Army to New Orleans Suburb Shocked
Thu Sep 8, 1:36 AM ET

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - A Canadian search-and-rescue team reached a flooded New Orleans suburb to help save trapped residents five days before the U.S. military, a Louisiana state senator said on Wednesday.

The Canadians beat both the Army and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. disaster response department, to St. Bernard Parish east of New Orleans, where flood waters are still 8 feet deep in places, Sen. Walter Boasso said.

"Fabulous, fabulous guys," Boasso said. "They started rolling with us and got in boats to save people."

"We've got Canadian flags flying everywhere."

No surprises. We were the only nation on Dday to achieve all our goals. Where is Derrek these days?

Someone said in another thread (can't remember what thread, somewhere in the Job discussion forum) that Derrek (aka Gollum) got banned but I don't know what for as the person didn't elaborate. I didn't notice anything unusual except the usual from him so I don't know what (if it's true) that prompted the banning.

America lost 6,000 soldiers that day. Canada, around 350.
Hmm. I wonder who had the bigger goals?

Canada. Given we went to war in 1939 and not 1941, I think we did our fair share of the heavy lifting over the course of the whole war.

Anyway, a simple "thanks Canada for saving my fellow Americans yet again" would be the best response. And you're welcome. Canada is always there for America when it screws up.

There were five beaches on D-Day, Brits took 3, US one, Canada 1. Nobody knew what the defences were like on the other side. The Cdn., US and UK attacks went forward at the same time. The Canadians took their objective and got lucky that the Americans tripped into a bigger nest of machineguns. We went forward at the same time with the rest of you jerks. You got a bad deal. Don't make up things to make it seem like we shirked our responsibilty.

Quote:
Juno Beach

HMS Warspite during D-DayMain article: Juno Beach

The Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach faced 11 heavy batteries of 155 mm guns and 9 medium batteries of 75 mm guns, as well as machine-gun nests, pillboxes, other concrete fortifications, and a seawall twice the height of the one at Omaha Beach. The first wave suffered 50 percent casualties, the second highest of the five D-Day beachheads (the highest was Omaha Beach).

Despite the obstacles, within hours the Canadians were off the beach and beginning their advance inland. The 6th Canadian Armoured Regiment (1st Hussars) was the only Allied unit to meet its June 6 objectives, when it crossed the Caen–Bayeux highway 15 km inland.

By the end of D-Day, 14,000 Canadians had been successfully landed, and the 3rd Canadian Division had penetrated further into France than any other Allied force, despite having faced such strong resistance at the beachhead. The 21st Panzer division launched the first D-Day counter-attack between Sword and Juno beaches, and the Canadians held against several stiff counter-attacks by the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend on June 7 and 8.

Omaha Beach

Troops in an LCVP landing craft approach Omaha beach June 6, 1944.Main article: Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach was the bloodiest landing beach on D-Day. The U.S. 1st Infantry Division and U.S. 29th Infantry Division faced the German 352nd Division, some of the best trained on the beaches. Omaha was the most heavily fortified beach, and pre-landing bombardment of the bunkers was ineffective. Almost all of the swimming DD tanks swamped en route to the beach. The official record stated that "within 10 minutes of the ramps being lowered, [the leading] company had become inert, leaderless and almost incapable of action. Every officer and sergeant had been killed or wounded [...] It had become a struggle for survival and rescue". There were about 2,400 casualties, most in the first few hours. Commanders considered abandoning the beachhead, but some survivors regrouped and pressed inland.

It would be much easier to thank Canadians if some of them didn't condition such aid on sarcasm and also take advantage of such aid to create news stories like this one.

Check out HapKi and Pligganease's posts in this thread and you might gain insight as to why Canadians act the way they do.

I hear you.

Check out the underlining in the original post, indeed the very content of the story itself, as well as mindmetoo's commentary, to gain insight into their reactions...the phrase is "kicking someone when he's down," and there indeed seems to be some pleasure derived from it in this case...you want to be thanked for that?

Yeah, I agree totally that igotthisguitar's intent was inflammatory. No surprises there- the guy is a grade 'A' Arsehole of the worst sort- a Canadian version of Derrek.

I have to admit that I was surprised to see that the source of his article was Rueters and not the CBC, CTV or one of the many lunatic fringe sites that he constantly mines for little nuggets of insanity.

Yeah, and I also think that constant references to WWII, as if that proves something about the U.S. or Canada, or France, or whoever, is kind of stupid.

Has no relevance to this context, too.

In any case, since that is sorted out -- and I don't speak for America -- but it's great that Canada could send assets to help, absolutely.
