Mastication is not a crime......

I know this has been dealt with before.... Heck, I know i've started threads about this before.... but it still liquid effluents me off..... korean table manners (yeah I know... cultural differences and all that....but still...)

Anyway..... Community Notice for Koreans:

Try politely and gently blowing on your spoonfuls of soup or rice (or maybe wait a minute or so for a wee bit of natural cooling) before depositing into mouth. This will prevent burning of vulnerable and sensitive mouth parts and will also (and most importantly) reduce the need to make disgusting combination slurping/snuffling/blowing noises. A few seconds wait to allow for cooling will not affect the taste and the risks of your food spontaneously disappearing have reduced somewhat since the korean war cease-fire...

Try it. Please. Oh, and chewing (with mouth closed) will aid in digestion....... This is also a good eating activity to try...

Thank-you. This community announcement brought to you by the evil penguin in the interests of making eating in restuarants with co-workers and other koreans more bearable......

I'm surprised they dont find it gross themselves, looking at someones half chewed food is not a pleasant experience. Oh well another cultural difference to chalk up....

Slurping doesnt bother me as much

a while back I saw a couple french kissing on the subway and was far more shocked than if I'd seen someone chewing their food. Also whenever I see ajumma's smoking I do a double-take.

Been here too long

I'd be more worried if I saw two ajumas french kissing on the subway.

Me too, and Ihaven't been here too long (only 5 years.. nothing compared to others).

I sometimes see old halmonnies smoking in the motorway service station's bathrooms and they would just have a ciggy dangling in their mouth, when their hands would be busy knocking on the door to see if there are people inside. I also look twice and find it a little amusing.

actually the noodles I understand..... a good noodle slurp is an enjoyable thing and its actually not that bad sound-wise. What I'm talking about is when somebody feels the urge to overstuff their mouth with a semi-liquid combination of hot soup and rice and then loudly proceed to snuffle and slurp in attempt to express gratitude for the taste while also vainly trying to reduce the temperature of their mouth contents before delicate parts (tongue, gums) are completely boiled away....

Anybody seen the ad on telly where some twit and his woman get near-orgasimically excited by their purchase of micro-wave rice? Cut to the close-up of twit with his gob full and over-flowing, trying to noisly inhale (with open mouth) his overheated rice before he dribbles it down his pink shirt while at the same time mumbling to his dim-wittedly smiling girlfriend about how delicious it is......

Its a lovely scene...

Oh, and speaking of lovley things.... our school secretary.... Very elegant.... one hot looking young lady...... the typical gorgeous korean princess..... but by crikey can she slurp......... She has the manicured fingered, the perfect hair and clothes and make-up. A smile I'd sell my grandmother for....... but jeez.... put a bowl of jiggae in front of her and she's elbows out and slurping it down with a noise enough to drown out the sound of.....well.... the sound of a classroom of kids after being told they won't be getting a sticker....
