My bad.
But as for Barbara, she's old. Up there with Pat Robertson. Losing the mind.
People that old start saying things they shouldn't as often as they toot while they walk.
When my grandmother was that age, she was standing in line behind some woman at the grocery store. She told the woman, "My you look like a nice person, but your hair looks just plain awful today."
At that age, I would be content with not having to wear a diaper. And I can gaurooonteee that they won't be pampers, given my size! |

I have been thinking alot about this very subject during the past couple of days, and I have come to think that while Barbara is still a racist, classist, and pathetic woman, she may have a point.
Think about it... Many of the people who are being relocated from the affected areas in New Orleans were poor, and were concentrated in a poor area offering little opportunity to those people.
Bad education, bad living conditions, few jobs... It all adds up to poverty and crime, whether you are black, white, or Eskimo.
Now, these people are being taken to other areas, where they will, hopefully, be ascimilated into a decent living situation with a government stipend to help them rebuild their lives. Most of the young people that have been affected by this will be attending much better schools than the ones that they attended in New Orleans. Better education equals better opportunities, and that equals a better future.
Also, the adults that are being shipped out are going to have the job opportunities that they did not have in New Orleans. Many going to new areas will receive skills training and vocational rehabilitation that will, hopefully, provided them with more opportunities in the workforce. More skills training equals more opportunities, and that equals a better future.
Lets face it. Many of the people that are being relocated didn't have a dime to their name. Now they are being given money, housing, food, clothing, medical care, and other necessities that they couldn't obtain or afford before Katrina came. More money to start a new life equals a better future.
Maybe what she meant when she used the word "scary" is that it is scary to think that in America people can be happier after their lives are destroyed than they were before.
I just wonder if the poeple of the 9th Ward will use this as an opportunity to better themselves and their futures. |

why do you think a government grant would help them put their lives back in order when years of welfare that many received didnt make a dent in the quality of their lives? Doubtful that those accustomed to a certain lifestyle are going to suddenly get gung-ho about 'being all that they can be.' |

I didn't say it would... I said I hoped it would.
I am from the south, so I know all about welfare communities. I know all about the sense of dependence that these communities feel on the government welfare systems...
I'm hoping that a fresh start and real guidance from helpful people, as well as a truly life-changing situation, will put these people on their way to a better life. |

Many of the poor of New Orleans are service workers in a tourist economy- people making around minimum wage. It is so unfair to paint all of the poor as all being dependent on the government dole, and unwilling to try to improve their lives.
Without an education, do you expect that they will escape the problems with the U.S. economy by moving to Korea to teach English? |

Again, I second Desultude in her assessment.
In fact, it would all be very nice if we could air-evac all of our high-schoolers to Minnesota or somewhere else like Connecticut where citizens enjoy, in addition to the standard of education, a nice standard of living.
Indeed, places where education are considered a priority and not a drag on the government enjoy a higher standard of life. Texas is really the tip, not the pinnacle.
But what a great opportunity!
Too bad for the citizens of East St. Louis or Gary, Indiana. Perhaps they should move their cities more into the "danger zone". Then they might experience such a windfall.
After all, the "less government, more business" set won't be doing much for them unless something like this happens.
Will it?
WILL IT? |

"Later that day, Mrs. Bush was a guest on the National Public Radio show Marketplace. During that interview she made these remarks about her interactions with the people quartered in the Astrodome:
Almost everyone I've talked to says, 'We're going to move to Houston.' What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.
And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them.
New Orleans residents housed in the various post-Katrina evacuation camps (such as the Astrodome) lost to the hurricane and the subsequent flood their loved ones, homes, jobs, pets, and their possessions. Their city sustained a tremendous amount of damage that may take years to repair, and they may never live there again. That they now have cots to sleep on, food, water, medical care, and the protection of law and order probably isn't what most of them would consider the book definition of events' "working very well for them." I agree...of course its nice to see a silver lining in catastrophies(i.e. isolated instances or examples), but people or economies or countriesas a whole are never better off after one.
if catastrophies and natural disasters where good for the majority then we would all run around destroying our cities every couple of years for an economic boom. |

It'd be nice to have more than two choices. |
