Wearing a damn sun shade.
I have people whining about old food and hygeine habits because I said we should forgive ajumas for wearing long brimmed sun shades and show some consideration.
Can you not cook your own food?
Are you so worried about another person's hygeine? |

Hygiene is I before E.
And yes I am definitely worried about other peoples' hygiene. Got SARS yet?
Do you regularly eat moldy food, it doesn't bother you?

| Did you know ajuuma's are hermaphrodite?"the third sex" I read it in the discussion topic book. And the ones who bend over and study the pavement all day are indeed North Korean spies. |

You're way of course on this.
Those women are protecting their faces from the sun because they have learned that the sun can cause wrinkles and cancer spots. They are not concerned with how silly they look and more concerned about their health. What the hell is wrong with that!
The older ajummas in Korea deserve a lot of respect! They are very health conscious and very environmentally friendly. Most of them do not use washing machines or dryers or any form of chemicals to clean things. Although they have plenty of money to buy such conveniences they see them as detrimental to health. They don't have hordes of chemicals under their sinks and they cook all of their food from scratch in a relatively healthy method. I don't think we should be attacking old ladies with hats who are the backbone of Korea and if left up to them would have one of the cleanest nations in the world.
Better yet, imagine yourself an old Korean going for a trip in the USA. You see a Denny's and everyone seems to be going there so you give it a try. Your English is not good and no one knows your language. No one! You look at the menu and then you point out what you want. While sitting there you notice more than half the men have their heads shaved and they're all wearing tight baseball caps, and you wonder, "Why do they all have those hats on? That looks strange. Why is everyone here? The food is not very good and the service is terrible! This is not a nice place! people are laughing at me! They are making fun of my hat!"
hey, leave the old ladies alone ya putz! |
Dude sorry for the late reply on this but I've been out "getting INTO the culture" and having fun for the last couple days. Anyway, you definitely have a sense of humour. I really liked the part about " left up to them would have one of the cleanest nations in the world."
So O.K. O.K.
Ajuumas Berry Berry Good!
Full face visors still pretty freaky!
And you...If you were either white or Korean you'd use a better word than "putz." |

Just as an aside - those plastic visors don't do a thing to stop UV light from filtering through. Just because they're made of dark plastic doesn't mean that they're coated with the appropriate things. They're only a few thousand won each. They'd be better off using a sunscreen with a high SPF factor.
HardyandTiny - what the bejeezus are you talking about? "Soaps her man" !?!

H&T:
Show some consideration to those old ladies? Yeah like they regularly show us any. Just today my friend was moving a piece of furniture for me and sure enough a pushy ajuma almost bowled him over in the hallway because she couldn't wait just a second. This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened. I even have adult students who complain and show embarassment about them. What planet are you on? |

| yeah, this can go under the fashion crime page too. I feel really wired and a bit scared when people cover there faces. What are they hiding? I understand protection from the sun. I am almost a vampire after all, but hats and visor that will not allow you to see somebody eys really is an issue with me. sunglasses are OK in sunny weather and out doors, but not in doors as some fashionless Koreans have done. (Wow, I sound bitter) |
Read J.P. Sartre, Being and Nothingness; chapter called 'The Look'

I see the old ladies as just that "old ladies". I think there comes a time where you have to put aside the imperfections and respect the elderly regardless of their behavior or the silly hats or the lack of knowledge about proper food storage. I don't care if some old ajumma comes barreling into me. Korean people seem to live with it and I'm living here and I think I can make some allowances for something that I can never understand.
If I don't like the food I don't have to eat it, and I can find a way around it.
I know the original post was harmless and was only joking about hats, and I felt it needed a counter point. Rather than accepting the idea that we are not all so perfect some posters feel it's better to go on about the faults of older women in Korea.
I spelt hygiene incorrectly. Okay. I thought the correction was immature.
I used the word putz. Okay. (I would have been impressed if someone corrected my spelling of putz, not hygiene)
I said ..she soaps her man. No excuse, one soju led to another. |

Yes, Confucius. We must all bow down and worship those who are older than us, even if they're stupider, ruder, and pushier.

It has nothing to do with Confucius.
Yes
It's part of becoming an adult, part of beginning to understand the world!
You don't like it!
It does not matter.
You cant change it... |

Wow, words of wisdom. So if you can't change something it doesn't matter?
By your logic, I can't erase racism from the world, so who cares? Why bother trying?
Seems pretty silly doesn't it.
Anyway, whatever, this is like arguing with CPA, getting pointless. |
