What holiday?? - It's Radha's birthday... Who???... Radharani - Krishna's internal pleasure potency manifested as his eternal consort... Although Krishna (the supreme source of everyone and everything - including the quality of beauty) is all-attractive, Radharani's transcendental beauty and devotion unlimitedly attracts even Krishna. Her face is described as surpassing the beauty of moonlight, and her bodily complexion is said to defeat that of gold. She is the master of all devotional arts including artistic decorating, (vegetarian) cooking, and playing musical instruments. She represents the compassionate side of Krishna, hence devotees approach her - rather than Krishna directly. In the Hare Krishna mantra, the transcendental sound vibration "hare" (huh-RAY) first addresses Radha, the supreme source of devotional inspiration . In the holy town of Vrindavan, India, where Krishna appeared about 5000 years ago (and where there are still over 5000 Radha-Krishna temples...) residents greet each other every day with an ecstatic "Jaya Radhe!" chant.

The demoniac person, who has no faith in God or the Supersoul within himself, performs all kinds of sinful activities simply for sense gratification. He does not know that there is a witness sitting within his heart. The Supersoul is observing the activities of the individual soul. As it is stated in the Upanisads, there are two birds sitting in one tree; one is acting and enjoying or suffering the fruits of the branches, and the other is witnessing. But one who is demoniac has no knowledge of Vedic scripture, nor has he any faith; therefore he feels free to do anything for sense enjoyment, regardless of the consequences.
When all is said and done, is there an official Asura holiday? You could lead many of our blind, faithless lot into the enlightened path with a day like that. |

Well, how about Halloween? Ghosts, goblins, hobgoblins (one more than a goblin?...) and assorted dark spirits of the night - including ganja smokers - are under the jurisdiction of Lord Shiva - who is probably the archetype for conceptions of the devil. But he is also a great devotee of Krishna, so we offer him all respect...Actually in Gainesville, Florida, where devotees have been offering free vegetarian lunches on the UF campus for the last thirty years many students have dropped by our preaching center to borrow devotional clothing, beads and hand cymbols (kartals) for their Halloween parties...and they'd chant Hare Krishna like madmen (and women) to make their role-playings more authentic...  |
