I'm looking at doing PhD work in English and leaving Korea. I'd like to go to the west coast (or nearby) of the US. So far I've found universities in Seattle, Eugene, and then several in California, in addition to Arizona and Nevada. Any recommendations for quality of life from people who've lived in or attended these places?
California would be great, but everyone tells me I can't afford it (I'm CDN, not a resident). Others say that Eugene is dull. Arizona might be too frickin' hot in summer. Does anyone have good things to say about any of these places?

I'm on the west coast now. I went to school in Eugene and lived there approximately 8 years of my life, and I loved it. It's very oregon-ish, health food, hippies, wine, weed, etc. Very relaxed. Seattle is a far better city, and I would move there in a heartbeat. Arizona is too hot. If you are a California resident, the price of public universities is practically free, or so I've heard. My cousins went to school in Santa Barbara and they loved it. |

Seattle is a great place to study.. pretty much all good things all the way around.
Eugene.. probably a good place for a student - its very student-oriented.
Where are the places in California? It varies significantly from location to location. San Francisco and San Diego are quite expensive.. but you can always find something somewhere on a student's budget wherever you go.
I've been spending a lot of time in Las Vegas Nevada recently.. I wouldn't want to study there.. its really spread-out and much better for visiting than living in my opinion.
I'd agree that Arizona is damn hot.. but I'd think you'd have summer vacation and could escape that easy enough. However, Flagstaff (AZ) is cool and comfortable.. (high elevation).. so not that hot there.. even get lots of snow in the winter. Northern Arizona University (NAU) is there.
California has so many options though.. Berkeley would be great and its a less costly than San Francisco. |

Thanks for the advice so far.. I will check out those places. I'm limited a little because I'm not a California resident or an American. Unfortunately, Flagstaff doesn't offer PhDs in English and there aren't as many places that do as I expected.
Only two responses?

I spent many years at the University of Washington, and I really loved it. Seattle is a great, beautiful place with everything to do. The only really unfortunate thing about Seattle is that many Seattlites think there dong doesn't stink. You know that old picture of the U.S. from the perspective of Manhattan (where the rest of the country fades away fast), well, its the same thing with Seattle. To the locals, no place in the U.S. comes close or is worth considering.
But if you are at the university, in the U district, of course people are from all over and it is cool. Great boating, hiking, skiing, cinema, coffee houses, restaurants and public market.
Oh, one other drawback- the place is expensive. |

I'd have said Flagstaff too... too bad they don't have your program. I love the climate there.
Seattle would be my next suggestion. I love it there. I lived there for a while growing up and my family is slowly moving back (my extended family is all there). My dad went to UW, and I would have gone there if I hadn't gotten accepted to my 1st choice uni (BYU). It's high on my list for a Master's though.
Good luck with your decision.
BTW... IMO California is highly overrated. I lived in Napa for 3 months and got so bored and annoyed with it that I moved home to Alaska... in the middle of January. |

Most, if not 100% of the students in any PhD program in which you are accepted (and most of the MA students too) will be a TA. All you have to do is teach one Freshman English class per term (3 hour work week) and you will get at least 2,000 $ a month plus 100% tuition fee waived.) |

Damn, that's a better deal than I got, and I got the best package at U.W. I taught more classes, though adjusted for inflation, the money was not so much less.
I suspect your a little on the optimistic end, but the point that there is T.A. money, and often cheap housing, to be had is true. |

I suggest living in the grad dorm. And get on the uni meal plan.
I did 2 Ma's and one PhD so I know. |
