The United States of Shame
In camps set up on the outskirts of New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina victims, no trace of the civilized nation known as America was to be found.

A child in charge of `6 babies' Shocked
By Ellen Barry Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times
Tue Sep 6, 9:40 AM ET

In the chaos that was Causeway Boulevard, this group of refugees stood out: a 6-year-old boy walking down the road, holding a 5-month-old, surrounded by five toddlers who followed him around as if he were their leader.

They were holding hands. Three of the children were about 2, and one was wearing only diapers. A 3-year-old girl, who wore colorful barrettes on the ends of her braids, had her 14-month-old brother in tow. The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love.

Thousands of human stories have flown past relief workers in the last week, but few have touched them as much as the seven children who were found wandering together Thursday at an evacuation point in downtown New Orleans.

I agree with the title of this thread, it is remarkably accurate.

Hang on a second. The US government warned us about people like you. You're playing that blame game thing that we shouldn't be listening to. True patriots should be looking at the bright side of things. For instance, did you know Trent Lott's getting a big shiny new house out of this? Now there's cause for a cathartic outpouring of optimism.

Well, the photo-ops are embarrasing: military helicopters landing to deliver food to give the impression on the 6 o'clock news that Bush is on top of things , Bush showing up in New Orleans, hugging to black teenagers, army trucks entering New Orleans, etc.

The reality is that the people who remain in New Orleans, mostly blacks, have been intentionally prevented from leaving the city on foot. It's now a well-known fact that they were forced to remain in squalor at the New Orleans Convention Center with criminals and monsters in their mist. It's despicable. Personal safety is a basic human right, and it's the government's responsibility to make sure these people are safe. To think there are babies there just breaks my heart. (Someone brought up the point that keeping poor black folk there is a bit too reminiscent of the riot at Justinian's Hippodrome.)

The world loves to jump at any chance to put down the U.S.

As for Korea, it wasn't too long ago that soldiers clashed with students, and the government leaned on the press to claim it was a communist uprising.

Heck, that's what my parents told me when I was very young. The hilarious thing is, my dad took part in some protests back in his day.

You're absolutely correct.

However, oftentimes it's deserved.

I absolutely disagree. The federal response to this may not have been all it could be, and that's shite, but it's a hell of a lot better than it would have been in most countries.

This is just another shining example of the current tendency to look at a situation from the worst possible angle. The truth is, no matter how the government had responded, they would still be getting bashed for not having done well enough.

People wouldn't be satisfied unless Bush came swooping down on the back of a pegasus at the head of a legion of angels, and plucked everyone out of the city at once. Even then you would still have people complaining about how unfair it was that Bush can summon angels for New Orleans, but not for Malaysia, and probably a bunch of atheists would sue the government over seperation of church and state.

Good gravy people sure can whine. Here's a question for you: What percentage of the loudmouths whining about the inadequacy of the federal response do you suppose have done more to help than donate a small chunk of one paycheck to the red cross or something?
