|
|
I promised my intermediate group we would study a song this Thursday. I can't settle on a song though. I need a song that's not too fast, but not too boring either, somewhat easy to pick out the words, and not too long. I'd like it to be a song they have a chance of hearing again in the future. I think they'd feel really good if they heard it somehwere and were able to sing along. So it shouldn't be too obscure, by Korean standards.
Has anyone done any songs in class that went over particularly well? |

Pick a Beatles song or Frank Sinatra.
Koreans often sing these songs (badly) at No Rae Bangs so they are likely to be familiar with them at the very least.
"My Way" is a favorite among Korean ajushi's. Its often their ship pal buhn (Number 1 , or best No Rae Bang song. The question, "Whats your number 18?" Means whats your best No Rae Bang song. |

I'll agree with Jack Sarang....Beatles' songs work well. They have heard the songs before, though may not know all the words or the overall meaning/message of the song. And they will hear the song again. I recently used "Let It Be" in my university class, and my students seemed to enjoy it.
Good Luck,

A bob dylan tune is worth it. At my first job in korea i taught my kinders Mr Tam man, and they loved it. Also taught them thunderstruck by acdc.
Dylan uses a lot of metaphors and similes, and just a good use of words.
Mr Tamborine Man
It's All over now, Baby Blue

Start with Tom's Diner - Suzanne Vega. A good introduction to listening to songs. |

Thanks for the great suggestions. I wish I had time to do more than one. I happened to see Eric Clapton on TV tonight. So I decided on Wonderful Tonight. |

Riders on the Storm - The Doors
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers (except for the part where he says "she sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy" windy?!)
Road Trippin' - RHCP. Probably won't hear it somewhere else but it's a really nice song. |

Wow! So many excellent suggestions here. I'll be keeping them in mind for next semester. Today I did Wonderful Night. It went well, they liked it and they even sang! |

Beatles' 'Yesterday' and Westlife's 'My Love' are ones with which they'll be a bit familiar. Bit hits with high schoolers, at any rate. |

I've used a few of the ones suggested. Another one not on any list so far is "The Wind Beneath My Wings". It even produced a decent discussion. (idioms: standing in someone's shadow; under someone's wing; Who has helped you?) They begged for Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers) but after they did it, they agreed with me that it was a pop song with nothing to talk about. (These were adults I'm talking about.) |

Hotel California - Eagles - lots of vocabulary and idioms to talk about.
Barbie Girl - Aqua- just a lot of fun - even for adults.
Shape of my Heart - Sting - the women love this one!
Englishman in New York - Sting - some good vocabulary to discuss.
Movie themes are sometimes good as well.
For middle and high school - anything that's currently popular.
Avril lavigne, Alanis Morisette, etc. |
