Gopher. I am sorry, but I don't know if this is a difference in national spelling or my spelling. I will try and check it out or Kiwi's who read this, is it their or thier? I have been here so long and interchanged NZ english and US english so many times, I am getting confused.

OMG I hate being rude as I always ignore the spelling and grammar on the board -- we all make typos, type quickly, etc etc.

But an English teacher who actually ADMITS that they think THIER is correct?

All 3 of the homophones start with THE: THEy're, THEre, THEir - an easy way to remember it.

And I'm perfectly willing to accept all of the bashing I get for writing that.

Ok, I must be wrong. What country are you from originally? Color or Colour? Man, I am more than willing to accept I don't know North American English. I just want absolute coherence on this matter.

Canada. But trust me on this one. It's not a NZ vs Canada thing. If someone can prove to me that NZ actually spells the word "thier" I will stand naked on a corner in Itaewon with a sign to profess my apology.

Ok, changing it now. Their or Thier.

For anyone's interest in the difference between languages.

Summer Wine: the reason I sent the suggestion to you via pm was to help you avoid the above...this was never an issue of regional variations on English. I truly regret that my credibility with you is that bad.

If you're male, disregard this. But if you are female, I can prove anything...in fact, I'm looking for historical dictionaries right now!

Who is to blame for American spelling differences?

Gopher, wasn't personal. I just had a brain spasm, 4 different ways of writing english I deal with on a daily basis.

To the rest of you who wish to bitch, this is my answer:
