i bought a bicycle last weekend and need some help. the gears seem to slip very easily. i usually keep the bike in a low gear, so its hard to get some initial speed....the chain falls off the gear if i press down too hard on the pedal ....this has happened 4 times in only 5 days...is there some way i can prevent this from happening? do i need to tighten the chain? thanks |

Which set of gears? The back or the front ones? I'm not a bike mechanic, but I've tooled around with them for a long time so I have a bit of an idea on how to fix most problems. |

if the back gears have your normal-style derailleur on them, there should be two little screws on either side of it.
these are fine-tuning screws, and they are what keeps the derailleur aligned overtop of the gears properly. i'd think that your problem is that your chain is set just a hair off of the gear, and therefore slips constantly.
they usually are not that tight, they should be tight enough to stay aligned but not loose enough so that they go out of whack every day.
find those two screws, play with them a bit - it may be a while before you get it just right, but i'm predicting that will fix your problem.
on this one, i think it's the two screws on either side of the spring.
my derailleur is different, but the screws look the same. |

Ah, that's what those parts are called. I always call them "the thingies"
Clean bike you got there. |

I assume it is a used bike, and if so the problem is that the chain has streched. Basicly you need to repalce the chain adn the front spockets. You can confirm this if the front sprocket point where the chain fits in is more oval than round. If this is the case, you got screwed and shouldl take it back. If it is new .... no reason I can think of. |

Okay, don't take offense--- but you aren't by any chance on the little ring in front and the little ring in back, are you? This would make your chain very loose, and liable to come off easy. |
