Hogwans are a crap deal over here - NOVA drones get 2.5 million won gross a month less deductions (about 300,000) and rent (gotta pay their own - average about 500,000/month), so they net about 1.7 million/month once/if you factor back in the pension refund.
|
Korea is much cheaper than Japan and you don't have to pay rent/airfare. In Japan, 1.7m is bugger all, but in Seoul you could save half of it no problem! And that's including going out a lot.

In any case, I wouldn't be too worried about a mass exodus to Korea. People come to Japan because they're into the language/culture (how many Japanese language/culture majors have you known vs. Korean majors?) or they buy into the "easy nookie in Japan" myth. Most teachers over here are terrified by the Korean horror stories they hear.

Thank God I never paid attention to all that garbage because I got a swell deal.

| I might come back to Korea after I finish here. I'm looking for a good gig after I finish JET but they're hard to come by and I'll be damned if I'll work for NOVA. It'll be a tough transtion, though - going from a country where you're treated like a minor celebrity to one where you're treated like a pariah... |
Are you sure you were in SOUTH Korea and not North? |

"or they buy into the "easy nookie in Japan" myth. Most teachers over here are terrified by the Korean horror stories they hear."
I was in Japan for 5 years and heard all those horror stories which is why I did a TON of research before coming to Korea. It has worked out great as my job is easy and I already have more in the bank after one month then I ever did in Japan(granted almost half of that is airfare reimbursement). However, I could have saved some in Japan but I took about 5 trips a year out of the country. Still though, I already know I'll save thousands here as it's so damn cheap! Seriously, in Japan I would never take taxis as they start at 660 yen, or 6 bucks american. I took a 20 minute taxi ride today and it came to about 4 bucks! I guess it's all relative but saving in Japan is much harder overall.
Cheers,

P.S. The "easy nookie" thing is NOT a myth. Not in Tokyo anyway, not even close. |

In Korea it isn't relative.
The wages are high and the cost of living is low. The wages in Korea aren't significantly different from Japan, yet Japan is the most expensive country in the world and Korea isn't even as expensive as Spain. High salaries and low cost of living are an unusual combination, as usually high wages accompany high cost of living, and low cost of living accompanies low salaries.
People harp on about how much Japan has to offer aesthetically and culturally - I don't disagree (not that I've been) - but Korea has plenty to offer as well and is a highly civilized and affluent society. If people can't see that for themselves, then I'm glad they fork off elsewhere because I don't want to meet morons like that. They probably have such a sh1tty time because of their sh1tty attitudes. |
