Made a mistake...
I have recentlky acquired a second HD for my computer. All was well and good after it was pout in, but the computer was going very slow (odd for me). I went into CMOS and saw a few odd changes and made the idiotic mistake of clicking "load optimised defaults". And with that press of the button, my second HD dissapeared.
I should clarrify that it does show on BIOS as IDEChannel 01 slave drive, but shows no gigs or anything. Furthermore, I know that its loaded correctly becasue as Iof this morning I had files on it. The question is (in a roundabout way, I suppose) how do I set BIOS/CMOS to recognise this drive again. Help me diskdoctors!

Perhaps this is stating the obvious, but why not try again?
Your CMOS should have a 'reset to default' option, try that.
And sometimes these things require a reboot or 3.

actually the "set to optimized efault" is what got me into this mess Sad. When it was installed the korean computer dude did some really odd junk that slowed down the whole yeard (not to mention that he couldn't finish- I did). Anyway, what appears to be the difference is that the disk moved from master to slave with the cd-r drive takin the master position.

You're going to need to provide more info.

There is no 'factory default'? Just 'optimized default'?

Who put the drive in, you?
Is it a sata or an eide HD?
Do you know whether you're using jumper or cable select?
If the later you should be able to change manually through CMOS, have you tried this?

Can you describe the symptoms of the 'running slow' which made you decide to go and change the CMOS settings?

OK:

That is correct. It shows "optimized default" or "fail/safe setting".

Here's what happened. I bought the drive in Yongsan, than realized as I walked away that I didn;t have the cables to do that, and as I don't know hardware very well I decided to pay 20 and have someone do it for me (I was buying a LCD too, so 20 more wasn't a heartbreaker). The guy does thhe work and plays with BIOS making things...odd (such as setting primary load device as Cd-rom). Then he goes in to computer management and loks around at my disc defragmenter. Hmm, I say as I get nervous (by this point an hour has gone by and now he's trying out my Mp3s and loking at my video editing software) I can do this myself. I go home, start the services and get it to work in about 20 minutes. No worries, I partition the drive into 3 parts (40g each) and put some movies and miscellaneous files on it (even watching half a movie that was on it). The next day I decide to fix some of the crazy stuff that he did in BIOS, so (idiot that I am) I click "optimized defaults" and BAM! no more, L, J, K drives. But now I have an odd M drive- which is not my virtual emulation drive- though it shows as a DVD player.
Going back into Bios I see that Primary master is set as my old 80g samsung, primary slave is blank. Secondary master is the Cd-RW drive and secondary slave is...the new seagate 120. Now, heres the next twist- when I look at the properties of this drive and auto detect- no info comes up- it comes up all zeros. This wouldn;t be so annoying except that I know its connected right- after all I do have stuff on it and have used all 3 partitions.

I'm honestly not sure, but I don;t think its an eide drive as its a seagate and their website doesn't have one of those.

I think it was the partitioning and the BIOS changes together that caused the problem. If you can remember what settings he used to set the drive up, it should be able to restore it to the setup that you had to get the multiple partitions going. Once you're there, recover your data, get rid of the partitions, then fdisk and reformat. Make sure your newly reformatted drive is set up as primary slave this time. I don't think it's necessary to use partitions unless you want to make them available for other users to access.

Eide is ata, 99% probable that's what you have.

As Pangit says, it sounds like you might have goofed up on the partitioning of the drive.

I'd highly recommend Power Quest's Partition Magic s/w, it's practically fool-proof.

My quick solution would be to consider the data on it a loss, fdisk and reformat, and make sure that the cables and jumpers are set up so that your new drive is a primary slave.

It shouldn't (as I understand it) matter, but you might check that the BIOS's disk page has the various available slots set to Auto and not None, in a screen that looks a little like this (if you have one in your bios):

Yes, I'm the one with the gnarly scars from the tiger attack.

Glad you got it fixed. Recovering all the data is a bonus, too.
