Even when there is a bar fight, riot, or guerrilla attack, your best protection is the fact that you are a foreign "tourist". Militants from both sides will avoid hurting you, and local proprietors and passers-by will protect you from harm.

Slightly paranoid but interesting read.
Maybe it's my maleness-- but the author seems to have a chip on his (her?) shoulder for third-world men. I knew too many girls when I lived in Mexico who enjoyed the attention of Mexican males too much..

Some helpful tips and we teachers do tend to travel, so I thought some readers may find some of the info useful. |

Some people are put off from independent travel by the apparent risks. Not only can you get sick, or killed in a bus wreck, but there may be people trying to rob you, cheat you, rape you, drug your drink, or maybe even put a knife in your ribs. |
I probably shouldn't post so soon after drinking, but that 1.6 of OB was ever so sweet!
I'm certainly no Great Toad (The Army rejected me. The Army! Seems the OCS board wanted people who were eager to fight, even pre-9/11.), but this one time I found myself in a war zone in West Africa. The gov'ment send in troops to stop the spread of a coflict (probably started by Liberian mercenaries, but that's another topic) that could have quickly become an ethnic civil war. . . I was putting my distance running background to good use trying to beat the dusk to dawn curfew when I was stopped by an airman sporting some sort of large, scary looking fire-arm. It was getting dark and I was far from home. I put my hands up and approached as ordered. I was afraid. He told me that he could see I was obviously not Dagbani and he was there to protect me from said feuding Muslim locals. He walked me to my destination to make certain the police did not bother me. On the way he and I talked about what's wrong with Muslims (an 85% majority in the area). By the end of the walk I felt like I had made a new friend. What a great guy! Sometimes people will go out of their way to protect an outsider.
However, the cheating and sickness can be real hazards. Just 'cause someone is on a tourism board doesn't mean he isn't part of a crime syndicate (Do not accept any offer to live with such a person as it can be awkward if you are caught with your bags packed trying to leave to look for other housing.) . And drinking the "ice, ice water" can result in dysentery. Bad, especially when coupled with malaria. Go for the filtered drinking water! And the OB 1.6 where available. |
