Went to the movies today, kids not only saying the usual 'Hi' but being able to carry on a half descent conversation on the subway! Sentences, with prepostions, conjunctions! Lotte Dept store, walk upstairs, the ladies in the elevator are discussing olive oil, and could easily pass for audience members of Oprah.............speaking of her, she has taken Korea by storm, my students sit and talk about the shows they saw........back to Lotte...........elevator doors open, TGIF is packed, starbucks packed, Pizza Hut packed, Dunkin doughnuts packed, and Charlie and the Choclate factory was just about sold out! People around me wearing Nike, levis, Polo shirts, the commercials in the theater were mixed with old 1950 songs from Americaa. What is going on? Now on t.v I can watch Cheaters, Seinfield, Everybody loves Raymond, etc...etc.. etc..
People are now buying ovens, hip hop rappers are everywhere, what is happening to Korea?????????? |

Scary ain't it, pulled right out revelations
And lo, the sky turned blood red, and the sea boiled, and Korea embraced the west.

i would just call it americanisation.. stuff in korea is invariably either korean, or american. also does anybody else think only the trashiest of western things arrive here; i mean, hamburgers, cheaters, britney spears... what must koreans really think of us?! |

Yeah, they are demaning it though.. they have their choices of what they like/want/etc. according to their tastes. American culture is significantly much more varient on that on nearly every level.
So the most appropriate question.. what should we think of them for demanding/selecting/choosing what they choose? |

Same goes for movies and films.
If you're an American, you know there are dozens and dozens of great movies a year that just don't go overseas (no demand). (And damn I miss NOT being in the States, because they just aren't available and non-existant most places abroad!)
Yet time over time, the worst of the worst American movies goes international selling billions and billions of dollars.. lowest common denominator all the time. That also states more for the international public tastes/demands in my opinion. |

Ha Ha, watched cheaters last night, the trash of the trash, huge black woman finds her husband in bed with another woman, unemployed red neck, gets in a fight with a ranchero over his women, but thhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaats entertainment!
(I guess it is better than the show where 30 fat people try to lose weight, or......the show where the gayyy guys try to make a straight guy look cool) |
