look, if any of you have any experience with a root canal, let me know..........my question is this...........after having a root canal procedure at the local dentist (which did relieve serious pain), he is now recommending a crown.........i read on the internet it is not always necessary unless the tooth is damaged, but the guy really guilt tripped me saying by having it simply 'filled' will hinder my lifestyle......i wont be able to eat meat, or any other 'firm' foods, and my tooth will soon 'discolor'.........is this BS because the crowning procedure is like 350k won, or does he have a good point? If anyone can tell me anything about this, please advise.....i would really appreciate this. Thanks..... |

I've had several root canals (in Canada) and my dentist has never tried to 'sell' me on getting crowns on those teeth. I'm no expert, but I imagine each individual case is different and the only way to figure out if your dentist is giving you the 'straight goods' is to get a second opinion. |

I've had two root canals. Both with crowns. Sometimes so much of the tooth is drilled out that the remaining tooth materiel is too weak and brittle to endure sustained food chewing. And before you know it, you're back in the dentist's office. |

That's the way it was explained to me too.
Darl, if you're really not sure just go to another dentist and get a second opinion. |

I've had 6 root canals (not a result of poor oral hygiene, but an unfortunate accident in which I suffered a pretty hard blow to the side of my face...)
I have 2 with crowns, 4 with only regular fillings in them. As someone else said, it depends on the tooth itself, how much of it was damaged to start with, how much of it was damaged further in the root canal process, etc etc.
However, I do also think it has to do with the dentist as well, and it's worth getting a second opinion if you're not sure if your regular dentist is trying to rip you off. My dentist told me that he would much rather put a regular filling in and have to do a crown later at a reduced price, than put an unnecessary crown in at the start. But, not all dentists think like that.... |

thanks, guys, i think i have recieved both opinions on the subject....i am unsure if i ever got the feeling the dude was trying to 'rip me off' rather i got a feeling korean dentistry knew no better than automatically putting a crown on after the canal....i never got a feeling of expertise from the guy that cut my teeth......plus the thought of getting my tooth ground down to a nub muddles me rather............frightens me to be more concise.........does it hurt? I am not so concerned by spending a few hundred bucks as i am by the thought of the procedure.......to grind a piece of my body down to a nub really honestly does give me rather debilitating imaginings.......................i would much rather keep this tooth than give it up to an artificial one.
thanks peeps.

Got away with a special filling installed by a Korean country dentist for, like, ten bucks. Seriously. This was five years before I ended up getting that tooth (and another at the same time) rooted out and crowned.
That dentist, so long ago, said the root was exposed so he rigged up a filling that had a cushion effect. He recommended a root & crown on the spot.
Well that tooth died out who knows when. By root canal time it was stone dead. No response from the nerve.
It was like, back in Canada, two grand for each root & crown. It's cheaper in Thailand. Or somewhere like that if you want to squiggle free of paying through the nose for this mundane stuff.
Funny thing. Before dentists, back in the cave man days or whatever, absessed teeth healed themselves. Sort of fossilize/mineralize in there and over-rule any infection. Like it would hurt for a while but if one gets through the infection, if the body fights it off, the hurtin' void just fossils up. Like a country and western song. |
