I usually go to a couple of sessions with topics that I know little about. It may even be a topic that I have little interest in. This forces me to learn something new, which of course makes my weekend that much more worthwhile. |
That is a wonderful suggestion! I am really glad that we can offer you something useful. |

Hmm, I tried going to the website today to get the banking information, as you said they are unofficially keeping up the pre-registeration for a few more days, but the conference section is closed! |

I don't know tzechuk, I haven't been too impressed by what I have seen of KOTESOL so far. Their public face is not very professional.
Been trying to join KOTESOL for several months now, but nobody there answers my emails or phone calls. And they haven't updated their website in 2 and half years.
Not a good first impression. |

I agree.
(but thanks for your help tzechuk; if it weren't for you, I'd still be wondering if I was in or not) |

Jack, I am sorry you feel this way about KOTESOL...
I just want to point out that KOTESOL's officers are ALL volunteers. No one gets paid to do what we do. We all have a job that pays us, so we can continue volunteering our time, effort and energy to serve the organisation.
Because of this, we cannot always get people to do certain things and I agree that things have lapsed somewhat in recent years.
I hope that things are going to pick up soon and that you will find a better run KOTESOL.
p.s. if you PM me, I will answer all your questions for you |

You are welcome, Eku.
I would like to just point out, though, that it takes around 3 weeks to a month for data to be put in our database and to generate a membership card. I believe the procedure immediately prior to conference is that we will issue new membership cards to those that joined at the same time of registering for Conference, at Conference.
Hope this helps.

Since we have a representative reading this thread I thought I would point out the stupid rule about not accepting internet or ATM bank transfers is really annoying and inconvenient on top of forcing me to pay an extra 3,000 won transfer fee. If I do it by ATM I don't pay a transfer fee... |

Superhero... this has been the issue for a couple of years and we are trying to resolve it. There are reasons behind why this is not happening and why you must use a teller and not an ATM ... on the day of the conference, we need to be able to reconcile your payment with your name before we can give you your name tag - there is no name on an ATM machine... therefore it will be complicated and take a lot of time to do the reconciliation.
This year, we started using paypal, although I am not sure if it is a won account or a USD account. Either way, we are slowly but surely making progress.. and hopefully next year we will be able to offer something better.
In any case, I am really glad that you are coming!

I've had the same problem as many on here regarding KOTESOL. I realize that it is run by volunteers, but that does not take away from the fact that we pay 40,000Won to join, and we should get what we are promised for that money. I joined in April 2004, and in September (after numerous emails)I finally got a copy of the newsletter, and that was it. I paid 40,000 for one month of a newsletter. Why would I join again?
If an organization is going to charge a membership fee, then they have to be able to deliver the goods.

My wife told me it is possible to have your name on an ATM transfer, but I'm not sure the procedure - apparently she's done it before.
I had to pre-register, I'm presenting. |

yeah, pretty sh1tty - unless you're invited. However if you present at a seoul chapter meeting they give you 50,000 in an envelope. I got asked to present back in February as I'm friends with the chapter president. |

AH.. I was going to post something about this.
If you are a current KOTESOL member (for at least 12 months) and are bring new people (2 or more) to the conference who sign up as members (pre-reg. or onsite reg.), you can enter our prize draw. Prizes include a laptop/notebook computer, free kotesol memberships (2 years membership, worth 75,000 won), reimbursement of Conference admission, outback steak out full course dinner coupons, optical wheel mouse etc...
 |
This sounded really exciting until I realized that my membership was finally processed last November, so that makes only 11 months.
The prizes seem nice, but I think with the relatively high turnover in Korea (and probably KOTESOL, too), they're geared at the "senior" members (such as those who came up with this contest?? ) I would imagine the odds are very good for anyone who qualifies.
It would help the contest in the new members also qualified for some sort of prize. A prize draw for renewing membership would help me remember to bring next year's dues, too.
Sorry to sound cynical, but I guess I won't be trying to convince my grandmother-in-law to join until next year when I qualify for the big prizes. |
