I have a similar thread (but not the same) in Q&A, but I want to ask here:

Do you know any movies that stereotype asians? For example, asian women are subservient, etc. Other stereotypes are welcome, too.

I'd like to add some short clips to my culture class.

I found one from: Gone in 60 Seconds.

"Falling Down" starring Michael Douglas.

I remember it didn't come here for years as it contained a scene where Michael Douglas goes into a Korean store and doesn't have enough for the can of soda. It went something like this:

Korean: "75 cent"
M.D.: What?
Korean: "75 cent"
M.D. You mean 75 cents?
Korean: "Uh"
M.D.: How about I give you 50 cents and you give me back 2 quarters for the phone?
Korean: No! 75 cent!
M.D. Where are you from?
Korean: Korea
M.D.: Do you know how much money my country has given yours?
Korean: No, how much?
M.D.: Well........I don't know but it's quite a lot!"

Anyway that is the scene to the best of my knowledge. It follows the stereotypical Korean store owner in the States. Give that a go.....

'Falling Down' with Michael Douglas.

he yells at the guy for not giving him a discount, and ends up trashing his store. He asks 'do you know how much money my country has given yours?'

Nice reminder. Too bad people over here forgot.

Brazilian movies are horrible for that.

They have a large Japanese population in Sao Paulo. In one movie I saw, as a side-story, this woman started dating a Japanese man. All of her friends were asking and making fun of her that she'd be doing karate and other stuff.

I forget the name of that movie.. I've watched too many and the names blur together for me. But it was a Brazilian movie made about 5 years ago.

I was thinking of that show on "ONStyle" called "The Gilmore Girls"....

The Korean mother is really uptight and conservative and doesn't understand her daughter (whose real name is Japanese)

I was going to mention that. It's not really a stereotype, though. Koreans do love to gossip.

In fact, I just saw a well-known Korean movie portraying Koreans the exact same way.

Usually comedies. Like the recently out on video Disney comedy The Pacifier. There are two bumbling North Korean agents posing as suburban neighbours. They're supposed to be trained agents but are portrayed as stupid foreigners.

I recall one of those old movies -- I think Breakfast at Tiffanys but maybe Seven Year Itch -- that had a very stereotypical Asian in it. Also, I remember seeing a book on the subject (I think dealing with Korea specifically) at the Kyobo in Daegu. You might want to check the bookstores where you are at.
