"The town of Mobile was one of the hardest hit by the storm."
The part that is being questioned is 'one of the hardest hit', particularly the word 'hit'. |

Do you mean parsley? You should find it widely available. |

Hmm, I guess when I said "parsing" I meant identifying the various parts of speech and of the sentence.
For example- what is the word "hit" in this sentence? I mean, hit is a verb, but it is performing some other function here. It appears to be a modifier, but what is it modifying? And what is the phrase "one of the hardest hit"? What is its function?
It's been a long day, and one of my colleagues needs to be able to answer a rather advanced adult student on this one, so I was looking for assistance from the grammarianson the board. |

Isnt it personification??
Mobile was hit hardest. The storm doesnt literally hit (punch) Mobile but it is given a human-like quality to describe the impact.....(???)
Like "the tree reached to the sky"
"The sun smiled hown on me"
"The rain kissed my cheeks"
"The car coughed and sputtered"
"Mobile was the hardest hit by the storm"
John literally hits Jack, Paul and Joe. Joe was the hardest hit (as in worse than anyone else).
Mobile was the hardest hit - as in worse than any other city/town.
I could be WAAAAY off but thats how I see it.

Active voice: The storm hit Mobile.
Passive voice: Mobile was hit by the storm.
Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
Hamlet was written by Shakespeare. |

Kimchi cowboy is correct, however the company is called Mobil not Mobile. |

Maybe I'm missing a joke here, but Mobile is a port city in the state of Alabama. |

"The town of Mobile"=subject
"was"=subject
"one of the hardest hit by the storm"=complement
"hit" is a past participle that is functioning adjectivally to modify the implicit noun "towns"
It might be easier to understand if it were written:
"The town of Mobile was one of the [towns] hardest hit by the storm"
past participles often function as adjectives |

I think you mean "was" is the verb.
This is the one I was thinking. I wanted to run it by the board before my friend explained it to his students.
Thank you all for your help. |

Mobil is an oil company.... deessell musta been confused with the city Mobile. Ive never heard of the city but I have heard of the company... I just assumed it was a smaller city somewhere in a huge country. |

Yeah sorry I was thinking about the use of the passive voice for the company instead of the town. (I have been reading a lot about the oil wars and have mobil on the brain) |

Yes. You're right. That teaches me not to attempt grammatical exegesis while drunk. |
