Hi,I am travelling to Korea in 3 weeks. I really enjoy playing poker, not for the gambling, but because it is a great way to meet new people. Do foreigners play poker? What about Koreans? I am thinking about buying a poker set here in Canada because I am not sure if they can be purchased in Korea or not. If they can where can i get them and how much do they cost? I am looking for a 300-500 piece chip set with case that includes one or two decks of cards and dice. I am looking for somewhat quality chips, not the thin 99 cent chip set you can buy at the dollar store. Those are garbage!

I found a 200 piece set here in Canada for $15, and although the chips are not made of clay nor weigh 11.5 grams each, they are the standard size and thickness. A guess a plus side is they do come in a case and are light, making them easy to carry.

In addition, I think using a poker set can also be a great learning tool in the classroom because it is easy to build English games using chips, cards, and dice, such as phrase poker ( I'm slowly developing that idea).

If anyone has any advice or tips on bringing a poker set please let me know.

Thanks

We play poker in Chungju but we play for CASH$$

My guess is you can buy chips here cheaper. IMO not worth hauling them around.

If you enjoy poker, fine; but some Koreans view card games that involve gambling as somewhat diabolical. In fact, they call playing cards money cards. My students, for instance, are expressly forbidden from playing with them, even it's a game like old maid. So enjoy but don't bring them to school or advertise that you like to do it.

There are poker games in every major city in this country...

We have a nice one going down here twice a week(we even have a proper league table) in Changwon with about 20 regulars which is a great group of guys, that is really relaxed and lots of fun

Bring the chips. I'm sure you will find a game...and they will well be appreciated..

Another suggestion is cards..the quality here are terrible so bring a few decks with you as well

Ditto on the cards. More important than bringing chips. The cards that can be bought here are 100% plastic vinyl. It's not just a laminate coating, but pure plastic and very slippery. Makes it very difficult to shuffle.
