You're a real douchebag for posting that here, Peabody; Now I'm going to have nightmares about my Philosophy classes and wake up screaming in the middle of the night for the next week.

Some of those classes had one of those guys (and girls), but they also had me- the "guy who always asks to borrow your notes because he slept in and missed class again" guy.
I'm happy to report that I eventually became the "how in the hell did that guy manage to graduate?!?" guy instead of one of the "well, I guess I'd better go teach in Korea- where can I buy a fake diploma?" guys.

I hated Philosophy class, the ideas were sometimes cool but the reading material I found brutal. "Read Descartes? Aw crap, can't you just summarize it in class and point me in the direction of an abstract?"

It was one of my majors and a passion.

I read related lit on the subject of the day including secondary literature debates. On a slow day I'd make a half dozen comments and questions.

The best classes were the ones with several active students in discussions with the prof (no lecture halls, just classes of 15-30 students).

Passive notetaking has no place in a philosophy classroom. The science, education and business students who were there for a Humanities credit didn't "get it". Those who bragged they hadn't done the readings were the ones with the biggest puzzled looks and rolling eyes (except for the truly annoying ones who recycle the same pet reading they did once a while ago and just can't get off of a point, having either an axe to grind or a perspective to promote).

My six grad school courses were the best. Nearly everyone participated full tilt. We were all of a kind.

I remember once taking a Philosophy of Religion. The prof did a bit of bait 'n' switch. The course calendar made it seem like it would address a more generic approach to religion. The prof ended up doing it purely from a Calvinist POV. Anyway, upon the prof sort of laying his cards on the table, one student just kept going on about human sacrifice and why would anyone get it into their mind that god required a human sacrifice.

I remember my first year at UBC and the only philosophy class I would ever take, but not because of this professor.

I'll eventually go back to grad school but I dread being around the pompous jackasses of university. The majority of college students seem more worried about impressing the professor with their reading list from the previous summer than actually learning anything.
