| Now, Fruit and Meat are non-count nouns, so why does Vegetables get to be a count noun? This does not seem fair? What is so special about Vegetables? No offense to Vegetables, but I really think that it should not be treated any differently than Fruit or Meat. |

I realise you were being smart...but
Fruit and meat are a small part of the whole.
EG: a piece of fruit is a small part of the entire fruit tree.
A piece of meat is a small part of the entire animal.
Veges are the whole, or the mostpart at least.
EG: A vege is the whole or almost the whole plant. It is not a piece or the plant.
Does this make sense? |

What about corn? Isn't corn a veggie? And why are peas 99.9999% of the time plural? I think MASH is on to something important here. |

That was a really really good explanation.
I'm not sure exactly what the corn confusion is, but there is some doubt in my mind as to whether it is even a vegetable anyway.
There are so-called vegetables who are really fruits in disguise, and the way to spot them is to find out whether they contain the seed or not, not whether they are sweet. Thus, peppers, corn, and peas are just masquerading as veggies, since they come from a fertilized flower. |

Just to clear up least a bit of this confusion, corn is actually a grain.

Fruit, collectively, is noncount, but I cant think of a single fruit that isnt countable.
Among vegetables, on the other hand, many are noncount: lettuce, broccoli, spinach, parsley, etc. |

I like Sheba's explanation. I was not tryimg to be smart as much as funny.
As far as corn goes, it is non-count and the kernals are count, which would follow Sheba's explanation.
But I personally see little difference between a cucumber coming off a vine and an apple coming off a tree. |

I figured it wasnt a serious question, but thought it interesting to give it a shot! I meant fruit/veges/meat as a collective.... did you?
As an individual there are heaps of countable and non-countable fruits and veges.... my theory is completely buggered there! We just happened to be studying countable and non-countable foods at the moment in one of my classes.... it is difficult explaining that many food can be both....
eg 3 pieces of chicken Vs 3 chickens
3 slices of pizza Vs 3 pizzas
And who can confirm that tomatoes are a fruit or vege!? I was taught that they were a fruit buy popular belief is that they are a vege.... and my students wouldnt have a bar of this fruit business! |
