Since it's now 1:40am, I'll mercifully try to keep this brief:
"We" never die. "We" were never born. The gross outer covering is what is born and dies - and without the animating presence of the spirit-soul - it's just a bunch of dead chemicals. We are mostly all very sentimentally attached to a bag of blood, bones, stool and bile (and other gross stuff) because we were all born in the darkness of ignorance - and scarce few of us have had our eyes opened with the torchlight of knowledge: the guidance of a bona-fide spiritual master... At the time of death, the subtle body, including the mind and intelligence, carries the spirit-soul to it's next destination like an aroma is carried by the wind. According to our karma and desires we get another body - material or spiritual. Because taking birth is so traumatic, we forget our previous lives - although the spirit-soul can remember past lives within the womb via "spiritual vision" courtesy of the "supersoul" expansion of God in our heart. An everlasting transcendental body full of bliss and knowledge and never-ending loving relationships on self-effulgent spiritual planets await us once we're ready to forego our material nonsense and reassume our eternal identities. (...God, I'm tired.)

Yeah, but not exactly like "Groundhog Day," because we usually can't remember. But whatever we do to advance spiritually is never lost because we pick up from that point our next lives.
Actually whatever your mind is absorbed in at the moment of death pretty much determines what your next birth will be. That's why it's important to have a regular spirtitual regemin (eg: reading, chanting, praying, etc.) to fix your consciousness so that you can remember a name of God at death. If a man is absorbed in thought of a woman, chances are that he will take birth as a woman. If someone is absorbed in hating a particular race one may take birth in that race. The movie Ghost was basically accurate as to what happens to very sinful people at the time of death - they see ogre-like creatures coming for them (casting a subtle net over their subtle body...) That's why so many people on their death-bed -out of extreme fear - pass stool and urine (scared beep-less...) And it's true that angelic type beings come for those destined for heavenly planets (and beyond ...) The human form of life is rarely attained and offers a good chance to attain spiritual perfection: all we need do is sincerely desire it and God does the rest. Ultimately, all living beings go back to our original home, but each time we completely blow the chance we get in the human form by making zero spiritual progress (and acting no better than animals) we run the risk of losing the human form our next birth and having to re-enter the evolutionary cycle, transmigrating through all the various species before we finally get another human birth - and a chance to transcend this world of material suffering and illusory happiness... |

I think that those people who recognized God and spent their lives trying to know Him and love Him will spent forever with Him. I don't really see people walking on clouds and strumming harps. What I read in the Bible tells me that I'll be spending a lot of time actually worshipping God. |
Well, I spend most of my time recognising breasts and booty. Does that mean I'll get to spend eternity worshipping them? |

Very good argument for the soul. You can also the make the case that it proves reincarnation - Since all the cells of our bodies change every seven years then we've had at least five completely different bodies by the time we're 35 - but we know that we're the same person we were - even when we had a baby body. (The body is always changing, but the soul stays the same.) |

an excerpt from The Blue Zoo Planet
Usually within but a quick flash, this Magic wrestles our small world-view from the very grips of our teeth, and suddenly, the Truth appears in all its grandeur. Oh my, how everything looks different. An all-knowing, all-encompassing sensation thrusts itself upon us as lightning devouring a dead oak tree. FLASH. The silhouette echoes throughout Eternity and is instilled into our beings forever. There is something...some place...an understanding--and Magic happens...Truth emerges. Curtains are jerked wide open. The sky reveals the true color blue for the very first time. WOW. Our stories...all stories, now make perfect sense. We shiver with warm comfortable awe.
The Truth is not what we think. The Truth is what is. Magic is brewing there--in that place--where it is, not--what we think. Traces of this Real Magic--this Truth, surface in infinite varieties--love affairs, sculptures, music, nature, revolutionary thoughts...or maybe even in a silly story scribbled to a friend.
Our perception un-warps, expands beyond conventional or unconventional measure. Abruptly, we become impartial observers of All that Is. Our stories lose their predictable nature and our whole world becomes museum-like. Now, everything from ice cream sandwiches to volcanoes are viewed in a different Light. Our stories become colossal, yet we simultaneously realize our nothingness. An instant shifting of spiritual priorities has occurred--essences rise, egos withdraw. The mundane withers and flees to the nearest black hole in utter defeat. Our stories are no longer exclusively ours--they've merged--One Big Story.
The Universe opens up and we are blessed with a treat glimpse outside our small lives, and are hurriedly ushered into a much larger, more colorful room. Sunlit rainbow splatterings reflect high and low; peacocks gossip in the background. We are having a grand reunion with our Original Stardust. Its a large affair, everyone is there. The costumes are flamboyant, the mood festive. Impressive marble floors, towering ceilings, and crystal chandeliers flourish. Punch spiked with bee honey is served by all the characters weve been encountering in our dreams for years. They look at us and wink; we shudder with awe. Snakes and monsters from our nightmares hang high from arched rafters in round swinging cages with wide-open doors. They are fed tidbits of Moon Pies by the Angels in charge of the catering.
And now for this evenings entertainment, we hear a deep voice from above announce. Its the Grim Reaper, and he performs a trapeze act to everyones delight. He swings high across the room, releases the bar and flies through the air with the greatest of ease. One back-flip...wait...two, but LOOK! -- On the third airborne summersault, his black hood tumbles off revealing but a common clown. The crowd goes wild. His sickle nose-dives, hits the marble floor shattering into a thousand pieces, each of which instantly transforms into a tiny jester leaping up and scurrying every direction in sheer panic. The embarrassed Grinning Leaper catches the next trapeze bar in perfect synchronicity, swings high towards the uppermost skylight, crashes through it, and disappears in an explosion of glass sprinkling downward like snowflakes in a windless blizzard.
Our previous notion of death vanishes...becomes laughable. This chuckle instantly bounces around the entire Universe, returns, and hits us square between the eyeballs. KAZAM.
Belly-up to the Deja vu Brew Bar, order a cup of do-tell tea, slice yourself a fat piece of Truth Pie. Know its purely impossible for anything to perish that ever existed. All thats happening is simply the continuation of the natural processes of Stardust Rearrangement in a tremendously immense quantity of what we can only grasp as time and space. It's a routine freeing of essences from atoms, spirits from bodies. We sprang from Stardust--we return to Stardust; the Blue Zoo Planet is our Magical Interlude...our tour of Organia.
This Power...this Energy...this Cosmic Windmill fueling Stardust Rearrangement nurtures us perpetually, otherwise we would not be here, we could not be here. And for those of us who are no longer pedestrians in our little organic zoo, we simply must take a closer look at the Greater Story to understand their reality...the Reality.
Your great-great grandmother's essence, the very part of her that was, and is--Real, lives today, just as the day the twinkle in her eye led to that special union with your great-great grandfather. The following connection of events led right up to this very moment...as you read. They are still here...now. If you imagine but for a second you can see that twinkling in their eyes. Or, whoever it might be you're thinking of...that departed our zoo. Look up now. As your eyes glance back down you see a quick flash, a little sparkle---it's Light from their eyes...their very beings--that person youre thinking of. For they truly exist in thought, and our thought worlds are our Real Worlds. Think about it; smile when you get there.
Our earthly senses are but a fleeting gratuity--here, during our vacation on the Blue Zoo Planet. Our organic tools leave us. We will, however, not be gone--Stardust Rearrangement. Are you smiling yet?
Usually but cameo appearances, these Truth blasts are illusive...slippery. Once experienced, we may chase them endlessly with no white picket fences in sight. A shiny penny is dropped into the deep blue sea; we see it...disappear; we know it's there; we dive for it. |

My post-death fate will be exactly the same as everyone here who holds religious beliefs:
I'll stop existing and the worms will enjoy a nice dinner.
Though I'm hoping to be fossilized. |

Our bodies may be food for worms (or burnt to ashes) but is that the sum total of our identity - or is it the body merely an external covering of our soul (which has it's own spiritual senses) and our mind misidentifies the outter dress as the real person? We don't say "I arm" we say "my arm"... If we lose an arm are we less of a person? Most people labor under the bodily conception of life. More subtle than the body is the mind. Some people misidentify their mind as their real self and remain primarily on the mental platform (accepting and rejecting on the basis of sense gratification). More subtle than the mind is the intelligence. (On the intellectual platform things are seen in a more philosophical perspective...)Most subtle of all is the infinitessimal spirit-soul, which is eternally existing as part of the infinite supreme spirit whole or Personality of Godhead. Our highest state of being is on the spiritual platform - which is infinitely variegated, eternally full of transcendental pleasure and knowledge... (This world of bodily and mental suffering truly sucks in comparison...) |

This comment reverberated with me. I was strolling down the street recently & glanced down at my arms swinging alongside me & I experienced a brief exhilarating disconnect: they were just curious objects that didnt belong to me. |

If everything is connected in the physical world (and one would hope this is obvious--we breath the O the trees emit and in turn they breath our exhaust, etc.), well, then, there is only "one thing." And when we truly realize this: BAM...or maybe-b..ba..ba...bam...BAM...whatever. Well, this is when we are no longer our "bodies;" we are part of this ONE THING and suddenly we can watch the worms munch away at our bodies with amusement...because we are Much Larger than organic cells. Ahh, is this what religion is trying to tell us in its distorted modern form? Die if you want to, or, join what is your intrinsic birthright--the realization of Truth. It's a beautiful thing. |
