462 Students Commit Suicide Over 5 Years
Four hundred and sixty-two primary and secondary school students have killed themselves over the past five years.
The number of students who lost their lives from school accidents has been on the rise: 18,941 in 2001, 19,676 in 2002, 22,613 in 2003 and 29,959 in 2004. School accidents account for about 73.3 percent of total student deaths.

The death of any young person is tragic, but the figures you cite are seriously skewed. The article in full details 3,586 student deaths, from all causes, since 2001, but the obviously erroneous final paragraph comes up with over 80,000 deaths by accident alone!
Even a cursory reading suggests that figure is wacked. Why promulgate a mistake?

Four hundred and sixty-two primary and secondary school students have killed themselves over the past five years.
According to a report released by Education Committee under the National Assembly, 3,586 students have lost their lives from suicide, disease and accidents since 2001.
The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development Sunday submitted the report to the committee under the National Assemblys audit.
Over the past five years, 2,269 students lost their lives in after-school activities, while 755 students died of disease.
The number of students who committed suicide was 462 while 100 students were killed while on school activities.
The figure for student suicides comes as Koreas suicides hit a record high of 12,000 in 2004 as more people took their own lives due to the prolonged economic hardship, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO).
According to the NSO, suicide ranked fourth as the cause of death as 25.2 out of 100,000 people took their own lives, up five ranks from ninth 10 years ago.
In the 2,269 after-school deaths, 1,161 students were killed in traffic accidents, followed by 513 from drowning, 139 from falls and 75 from burns.

But you selectively posted it as if it were factual. Why? |

The stats might be screwed up, but anyone working in Korean schools can see the obrious - the pressures must really drive up suicide rate (there was no figure on attempted suicides), and school safety can be appalling. Look at some hogwans - 100+ kids crammed into the fifth or sixth floor of a building with rubbish clogging the only stairwell and no fire escapes. The 'terraces' on the side of the soccer pitch at my school are so steep that someone who slipped at the top could easily fall all the way to the bottom, getting battered by huge concrete steps the whole way down.
I'm sure not surprised about the number of students dying in accidents. I'm surprised more of them don't get run over going to and from school. |

Actually, this info tells us nothing unless we know what the changes have been over time AND how they compare to other countries. So, we know half the info.
Here's some on the US:

Suicide is a tragic and potentially preventable public health problem. In 2000, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S.1 Specifically, 10.6 out of every 100,000 persons died by suicide. The total number of suicides was 29,350, or 1.2 percent of all deaths. Suicide deaths outnumber homicide deaths by five to three. It has been estimated that there may be from 8 to 25 attempted suicides per every suicide death. |

Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults
In 2000, suicide was the third leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds—10.4 of every 100,000 persons in this age group—following unintentional injuries and homicide. Suicide was also the 3rd leading cause of death among children ages 10 to 14, with a rate of 1.5 per 100,000 children in this age group. The suicide rate for adolescents ages 15 to 19 was 8.2 deaths per 100,000 teenagers, including five times as many males as females. Among people 20 to 24 years of age, the suicide rate was 12.8 per 100,000 young adults, with seven times as many deaths among men as among women. |

Real Reality's MO is to find anything negative about Korea and post it, whether it is real or not. It doesn't matter if it's obviously a lie, if it puts Korea in a bad light, post it. Most people here simply just don't take him seriously any more. Very few find him truly informative. You can get the same or better information from reading newspapers and Google. |

Accidents: I'm waiting to see someone slip out of their slippers and go tumbling down the stairs at school. Mainly me. I've learned why so many Koreans shuffle their feet.

There were always loads of 'accidents' happening when i was in high school, but due to different things..... drink driving, doing something stupid, playing rugby, drowning and suicide. I wonder how the stats compare???? Teenagers have pressure and problems in most walks of life. All the causes in all the cultures need addressing. |
