No, not George Kostanza's father- who once had an a romance with a Korean girl but had to call it off on account of his refusal to take off his shoes in her parents' place- but the new movie based on the a TV show called 'Firelfly' which tanked a couple of seasons back.
I caught about 10 minutes of one show but it didn't really hold my interest, it was too 'cowboys in space' for my taste.
Interestingly enough this is a Cinderella story similar- to the Family Guy- in that fans have managed to help resurrect a show that the networks dropped.
Anyway, it appears to be getting some mighty fine reviews so I think I'll be checking it out this weekend- is there anyone out there who can give me a bit of a Firefly primer?

Apparently the movie doesn't require it, but nevertheless... |

I saw Serenity last night and loved it! I have the half-finished Firefly series on DVD and was sooo disappointed that it finished where it did
But the movie is awesome! Action, comedy, drama, great characters and it was really satisfying to find out "stuff" (no spoilers here).
Firefly is the name of a type of spacecraft. Serenity is the name the Captain Mal Reynolds gives to his ship. It's set in the distant future - there's a kind of fusion of the old American west and Chinese cultures.
Mal and his 2ic Zoe fought against the Alliance (kind of like a central government of all the planets) as independents. Serenity Valley was where a big battle took place that not many survived - that's what Mal named his ship after. The independents (also known as brown coats and which is why Mal swishes about in one) lost the Battle of Serenity and lost the war.
After the war, Mal and Zoe and their crew become like a band of smugglers, sometimes doing illegal stuff, sometimes legit stuff, always avoiding the Alliance.
Wash is the pilot of the boat (married to Zoe), Jayne is the big dumb fun tough guy and Kayley is the brilliant mechanic. Inara is a kind of high class hooker known as a "companion" and she leases space on Firefly so she can service her wealthy clients around the solar system. Very beautiful and some feelings there between Mal and Inara, though neither of them will ever admit it. At the end of the TV series, Inara gets off Serenity, but she comes back into it in the movie...
They take on board some passengers at one stop - a Shepherd (preacher) and a doctor, Simon, and his sister River. Simon snatched River away from the government bad men who were doing all kinds of nasty experiments on her and turned her into a psychic nutcase... the Alliance REALLY want her back which leads to all kinds of trouble for Mal and his crew...
Which just about brings you to the movie... |

Looks as though there won't be a sequel, Serenity fans: the movie fared terribly at the box office its opening weekend.

Studios make something like 75% of their revenue from DVD sales, int'l box office, etc. Firefly got canceled but its DVD sales were awesome. I wouldn't be surprised to see the same happen with Serenity; plus it was very cheap to make by today's standards ($40 million). |

It was good enough to make me want to dload the tv episodes.
It was a lively adventure-SF movie.
Downsides: I still found it a bit "Cowboys in space". and It did feel like a 2 hour tv movie on the big screen.
Still, considering all the crap that gets made into movies these days this was a lot better than most. |

this movie also reveals things about how our society thinks at the upper and lower levels.

I've been downloading episodes- it's safe to say this show has grown on me and I can now see why they're attempting to revive it. Hope it works (but as Sparkles points out, the money doesn't appear to be adding up). |
