so my wife and I have been here for a month now, and we're settled in to the point of wanting to do some travelling soon. (not to mention we're finally getting paid next week - WOOHOO!)

We're in Cheongju, and don't have our own means of transportation. I can read hangul now, but can't do much communicating beyond that.

Anyone have any suggestions as to good places to visit, and possibly (if I can impose) basic directions as to how to see some places whilst there?

Anything will do, mostly looking for 1 or 2 day trips for the weekends.

Any help would be appreciated.

I went on a City Tour of Cheongju and its environs, when I was living in Daejeon, which is not far from it. There was a nice Folk Village there and a Cheongju Historical(?) Museum---there was archeological stuff there,too. Perhaps you can go on a City Tour---ask at the Tourist Office.


Seoul is very nice,too,it's not that far from Cheongju!


You could go to Jeju Island,it's not cold yet in the subtropical climate there,but I don't think you could do any swimming. You need to take at least 5 days off for Jeju,though!

As to ways of visiting places while there,first of all,get a "Lonely Planet Guide" for Korea:it has suggestions on "getting there".


In Seoul, they have a very comprehensive subway system and bus system. You can take taxis, if you wish,to avoid waiting for buses or running up and down the subway staircases like maniacs. Oh,and certainly,another way to avoid that is to take a City Tour of the city. It covers great sights and costs only KW 10,000.


You can get to Jeju Island by airplane from Seoul or a ferry-boat from Mokpo or Pusan. While there you can get around by Airport Limousine Bus, various city buses or taxis. Taxis are cheap in Korea.

If you are looking for a cool mountain to go to near Cheongju go to Deadunsan(��л�) which is about an hour south of Daejeon..

Spiral staircases and suspension bridges on the way up and plus a really cool little village down the bottom to get drunk at and eat heaps of bibimbpa and parjeon(korean pancake) and plenty of yoegwans to sleep in...

Daedunsan was cool if you're into hiking. Songisan is beautiful too and not too far from you I think.

Obviously Seoul and Busan are great if you need a hit of Western culture (food and English bookstores).

Cheonan, while not too exciting does have the biggest (???) museum in Korea, Independance Hall,which is worth a trip. Pretty close to you I think.

This coming weekend there is a lantern festival in Jinju city and an International mask festival in Andong.... Festivals are terrific! I went to the Mask festival last weekend and it was just awesome!

Try not to worry too much about getting around, I find most people are very patient and willing to help and often offer to help without you even having to ask. If you happen to run into a foreigner then theyll help as well... I found this country a lot more accommodating than I expected. It so much easier than I thought! There are tourist information booths at most train stations, and many bus stations as well. The lonely planet guide is awesome... they give prices, bus numbers, directions, accommodation, restauarnts.... its really good. And a phrase book will go a long way. Even if you cant read it or speak it, you can point to the phrase and show someone.... With money just take a pen and paper and they will write down how much something costs - I love that they use english numbers!!
