While Bush goes along appointing stale, old, white cronies of his on the Supreme Court, we in Canada have a more enlightened view. Perhaps this is why our country is such a good place to live?

Yes, how wonderful that we don't complicate our supreme court with procedures like congressional hearings or senate inquiries into a justice's past or qualifications-- Toronto lawyers simply recommend a politically correct person and the PM appoints him to enforce a charter of rights that no one voted for. Hurray for us.. Confused

Quote:
"No one should be appointed who is not brilliant and who can't really do the job," he said, but added there are many people who would qualify. "It's not like picking the best hockey player in the NHL. You're not looking for the one Gretzky out there."

Nice to see that the 'bar' has been set so low. Why, anybody can do it unless they "really" can't measure up!

Lets see, that appointed supreme court has given us:

Equal rights for all canadians, allowed the provinces to go after big tabacco, settled some First Nations claims that the government is unwilling to do, allowed private insurance. In fact I can't think of a decison that I really disagree with. I cant say that about the US supreme court.

Mr. Hite,

Just as an exercise in mental agility, let's see if you can make a post on this thread without refering to the US. Like uh, you know, for instance talk about Canada without defining it as NotAmerica. You can do it! I know you can.

How about this, I will do that when the US stops telling the rest of the world how we should act while it does whatever it wants with impunity. How bout that?

As for my refernce to the US supreme court I only mention that one because that is the only supreme court that the world's media covers so it is the obvious comparison but I would love to hear from other expats about their countries high courts. Are they good or bad? Mostly white men or a wide representation of society? .

Copy.

But just so we're clear: this thread, then, really isn't about the Canadian Supreme Court, is it? It's just another thread about how you're better than the Great Satan.

No, not at all, I don't think the US is great Satan or anything else so foolish. I do hate Bush so the opening was just a crack at him. MY point was that like most of the REST of the WORLD the US appoints mostly older, white, men. Canada in its last 3 picks has made some innovative choices. I would like to see every country choose more progressive supreme court justices. As for you americans it seems that you are the ones with persicution (sp) and inferiority complexes, how times change.

Your thread in a nutshell: Canada appoints a new Supreme Court justice, therefore you see an opportunity to reference your hatred of Bush and to also reference Canadian moral superiority to the U.S.

It would seem that way. >Sigh<

(But I did enjoy the part about blaming it on the 'world's media'. That was a good one.)

No I made a crack a Bush because he deserves it, but the point of the post was merely to discuss the politics of supreme courts around the globe. However I didn't expect the great babies of the globe to get so worked up, I didn't realize you guys were so insecure about your state.

Maybe I should blame it on Radical Islamists or activist judges, or the moral corruption of the liberal elite, perhaps the blame lies with hollywood/video game industry lack of morals, or is it Michael Moore's fault?

What's wrong with old, white men? By the way, you are aware that Sandra Day O'Connor's vacancy is the one that they are trying to fill now, and they are trying to fill it with a woman (alas, she is white). Clarence Thomas is also not white, although he is a man and old. I have to admit, though, we haven't ever had any black, bisexual, parapalegic women serve on the Supreme Court.

No but one woman on the Supreme Court whilst women make up more than 50% of the population seems a little unfair. These right wingers love talking about democractic deficits so that is a little shameful. And Clarence (Long Dong Silver) Thomas is hardley a great choice for a judge, black or not.

Well, by your logic we need to have so many right-wingers, because about 40% of America is somewhere on the right. As for women on the Supreme Court, do a google search for law school enrollment by women in the US. You'll find that in 1982 only 33% of law schools enrolled women, and now it is 44%, but that enrollment of women has jumped by 2000% from 1964 to 1994. So that would put law school enrollment of women in 1964, which is maybe a bit early even for Sandra Day O'Connor to have graduated, at approximately 2-3%.
