Whenever I fly into Korea or Japan, everything looks like the minature set of an Ultraman TV show from the '60s/'70s. That there's not a monster stomping on the bridges and oil refineries, well, it just seems that's all that is missing.
My favorite TV show when I was a boy in the early '70s was Ultraman. The version with Hayata and the Science Patrol. I always remember the Korean word for "white" because it sounds a bit like Hayata. Hayata was a white hat character. Hayan sek.
It amazed me, as a child, that there was world that looked a lot like North American cities with cars and office towers and bridges but they had all these funny differences (aside from rubber suited monsters). The cars looked like little tin cans. The people all had black hair. And they had funny looking trains. I wasn't fully sure why the Science Patrol had laser guns but the police and the army didn't have them. And since no monster on Ultraman was ever actually killed by a laser gun, it was a bit beyond me why then even bothered to carry them around.

Godzilla.
It always got me how they would throw everything at him: Artillery, rockets, napalm, machinegun. You name it, he never went down. And here's this officer firing his pistol.

For me, it was a more obscure show called "Space Giants."

A big gold robot (Goldar)--
an average-sized female robot (Silvar)--
and a kid robot (Gam)
all turn into rocket jets.
Only Goldar looks somewhat like a robot. Silvar and Gam look like people with alien antennae. They fought a Gene Simmons-inspired robot called Rodak.

BY JOVE YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!
That is what's missing. A giant monster attack is exactly what Seoul needs.
(Just kidding)

I am definitely on my own with this one:
When I was seven I saw a Mexican soap opera named:
'El pecado de Oyuki' or "Oyuki's sin"
I thought Japan (filmed on location!) was beautiful and that the lady that played Oyuki (Ana Martin, a Mexican who just had her eyes taped back...REALLY!) was so exoticly beautiful.
The Japanese lady falls in love with a (gasp!) gringo but the evil brother won't let true love persevere (It does at the end)

also, Hello Kitty.
and ACTUALLY I like just Japan...not Asia. |
