Hi,

I'm connecting my laptop (W2k) to my netgear router and I'm getting a weird problem. It connected fine when I tried it first, but now I can't set my laptop machine to see the router as my gateway.

I've tried setting the IP/DNS info on the laptop to recieve dns, ip info automatically and I've also inputted them manually but it doesn't work either way. Basically the laptop just won't accept the router as the gateway. I'm not sure which of them is at fault exactly, although the laptop did accept the gateway connection when I entered it first.

I can ping the router with no problem, but I can't connect to it over http - or any outside system obviously. The router has three other (linux) systems connected and they all work no problem. I've tried switching around the ports as well, but to no avail ...

anyone have any ideas ?

Just set the laptop to obtain address automatically. If that doesn't help hit the little reset button on the back of the router for about ten seconds. (Check the manual)

Make sure you didn't create any bridges in your networking control panel.

@Wrench

Your first few words were good but after that I dont think its the wisest thing. And what are you on about making bridges? Its a laptop... It will only have one LAN card. Who runs two LAN cards on a laptop?

My guess is that you need to login to your router and check settings. How many IP's have you let your router grant? Are all your linux systems on static IP's or automatic?

Also, have you tried disabling all firewall software. Like Zonealarm etc. on the laptop?

There are many variables that could be the problem. I need more info to go on.

Also, have you tried a new LAN card on the laptop?

You can add bridges in a laptop. Keep in mind a LAN card is only one way to connect to a network. IEEE1394 cards are also network connections and so are telephone modems.

I was going to say something about firewire and bridging connections with that, as well. Yes, you can.

Yes, but come on... Who does that? If it's a default setup (which I am sure it is) you know that is not enabled.

Hey, you never know what someone might do if they don't know what they're doing. Somehow my aunt happens to trash every computer I set up for her. She does all kinds of things to them because she mucks around with it without knowing anything about them. I think she's gone through six so far.

Yeah, my thought was that a user could unwittingly enable a network bridge in his/her attempt to "fix" the da*n thing.

Cool, thanks guys ... I got the problem. I had an old vmware server installed that I'd forgotten about and it was hogging my routers IP.
Why it worked the first time though, I have no idea.

I've got one word for you ... Ubuntu !!!
If all your aunt wants to do is surf the web and check her emails, then giving her a windows system is kinda like giving an alcoholic the keys to your car and a map to the local brewery IMO.

Yeah, but my aunt wants to have a similar machine to what her friends have. She'll talk to her noob friends about what they don't know about computers and, while I'm setting up her computer, asks me all kinds of questions like "is it a windows?" (sic).

Glad you fixed up your problem.

@dbee

Have you tried "Xandros"? It is very good and can be made to look like windows.

Ubuntu is also very good as a desktop replacement.

Giant, no I haven't tried Xandros ... I've heard that mandrake is also really easy as well.

But from all the *nix's that I have tried ... RH, Gentoo, Ubuntu, BSD, Knoppix, LFS and maybe some others ... I have to say that I'm astounded by the quality, easy of use and friendliness of the Ubuntu distro and community.

If you haven't tried Ubuntu I'd seriously consider giving it a go ... It's a major step forward for linux IMO and with a couple of more distro's like this one - I really think that linux can't be far behind Windows for long.

Actually I've gone kinda unbuntu mad ... so apologies if I sound like a salesman Laughing

I have used Ubuntu, I like it very much. But what do you expect from a distro that comes from Africa?

(I am south african! Smile)
