Is this a racist symbol?

Prison staff at Wakefield jail are asked not to wear St George's Cross (England flag) tie-pins they had bought to support a cancer charity.

The English national flag could be "misinterpreted" as a racist symbol, says Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers.

She added that race was a weak area at the prison, where all the warders are white and 16% of inmates are from ethnic minorities.

The top security jail is home to child killer Ian Huntley, and Harold Shipman killed himself there last year.

"If the only problem the chief inspector found was tie pins carrying the cross of St George, which is after all the English national flag, then there can't be a lot wrong with Wakefield prison," says Brian Caton of the Prison Officers' Association.

What do you think?

England is calling EVERYTHING racist so much that it is a vicious circle and creates even more racism than if nothing was said. its pathetic.

I am married to a nigerian, he doesnt care whether i call him black blue pink or green. he calls me white and so do all the other nigerians when u go there. This country is getting crazy.

Why do we have Whiteboards now? - because its racist. ( blacks couldnt give a damm about whether a board is white or black, unless they want to cause trouble)

Soon Britain will not be able to sell marmite because `its black`

Africans are proud of their color and so should we all be. why should they have their pride taken away from them by this crazy color buisness?.

I had a similar experience in high school. (or at least at that age)

A family member gave me a gray sweatshirt with the Union Jack and the word "LONDON" printed across one of the breasts. Quite a nice sweatshirt actually and enjoyed wearing it a lot.

Thing is, I was living in NC at the time, and there are some pretty ignorant people floating around the US.

So, despite the word London right beneath the flag, several people (3 I think actually) took issue with my wearing a "Confederate Flag" on my shirt.

I think 2 out of the three were white folks, but it's been a while and my memory is hazy.

Anyway the whole affair just left me sitting here thinking "#$@% you're ignorant" but what can you do.

Any way, given that in the minds of the average American high-schooler Britain probably doesn't feature much, I wonder if the georgia thing isn't a similar case.

(Amusingly enough the highest I've ever seen the Stars and Bars flown was in Ireland. My uncle and I went to investigate and found it was a couple of Frenchman who had picked it up at a tourist gift store in Brussels or Amsterdam or somewhere. They didn't know what it was but thought it was hysterical when we tried to explain, their English being only marginally better than our French, and they being quite toasted. Fun day though.)

A long time ago some British tourists were in Tibet and one was wearing a tshirt with Phil Silvers on it. Apparently Phil Silvers movies had undergone a bit of a revival in the UK (which includes Northern Ireland and Irish stew) A Chinese soldier started screaming at him to take off the tshirt or something and then cracked him over the head with a rifle butt.

The Chinese soldier thought he was wearing a tshirt of the Dali Lama.

Apparently they look a like to Chinese people:

Not true- a few London councils did say they should be called "Chalkboards", but that was back in the 1980s.

:::sigh:::

people adore being offended and airing daft grievances. the bigger problem is when these baboons get taken seriously and are given a platform.

(hence the __________ anti-defemation league)

What racist symbol? Not the swastika, is it? You'd have to be a moron to confuse it to one.
