So after a coworker pulled a runner last week my school has requested that we hand in our diplomas for them to hold onto until the end of our contracts...they are citing that it is a newly passed immigration law...
I smell the BS from a mile away...too coincidental in the timing...but just for sake of being thorough....anyone else heard of such a thing?
And even though I have no intent of running (it is my second year with this school) should I hand it over?
All advice is greatly appreciated! |

Sounds bogus to me, but I think this is a question for the EFL-Law Forum:

No way they'd get mine. If I thought they were lying I'd tell them I sent it home to my father for safekeeping. |

Tell them you want a copy of their dental records, their medical history and their tax records, a criminal background check as well as a complete report on their family lineage right back to the Chosun dinasty.
Tell them that if you wanted to leave, you would have left with the teacher who did the runner.
I think they are just blowing smoke.
If that really became a requirement, then a lot more of us would decide to give Korea a not so fond farewell. |

They're just trying to snow you with some BS story so they'll have leverage in case you want to leave as well.
Tell 'em no way. |

NEVER give your diploma to a Korean. Only immigration needs to see it, and all they need is a Korean-certified copy. |

The Dept of Education need a copy as well, but other than that they don't need to touch your original, in fact I didn't bring my original I had it notorised at the embassy in Sydney. |

He's one of those people who lie to foreigners because he thinks they don't know any better. |

If my boss told me that, I'd say,
'You know, it's good you mention this. I was at the Korean tax office a few months ago asking about tax rates. They seemed to be really suspicious of my job here, and they asked me to submit tax documentation about our school, including:
1. Monthly statements of teacher taxes to be paid to the gov't by the school.
2. Detailed information of how many koreans and foreigners are employed at the hagwon, and approximate working hours.
3. Monthly updates citing the number of students you are teaching at the hagwon, and approximations of how many students attend the hagwon in total.
They told me to keep this secret, but after collecting this information for 2 months, I'm getting tired of it, and think it would all be a lot easier if you just spoke with them directly in Korean about it. I'd be happy to let you do that, if you would kindly turn over my degree.' |

Ask them for $25 and you will be more than happy to order them one from your university.
You gusy know you get more than one copy of it if you request it...right? |

After the hassle I went through to get transcripts, the countless - clueless individuals that I emailed, then phoned who didn't have a clue how to go about getting me what I needed or who I should talk to. People who sent me messages back saying ,
"Hey, does anyone know if someone sent transcripts to this guy"?
I can just imagine what I'd have to go through to get another copy of my degree sent out. |
