Cheney Warns of 'Decades of War'
By Jonathan Beale
BBC News, Washington
Mr Cheney made a direct appeal to the American people US Vice-President Dick Cheney has said that the US must be prepared to fight the war on terror for decades.
Addressing US military personnel, he said that the only way terrorists would win was if the US lost its nerve and abandoned Iraq and the Middle East.
Mr Cheney is the latest senior member of the US administration trying to bolster support for the war in Iraq.
On Thursday, President George W Bush will once again address the issue in a major speech in Washington.
The situation in Iraq remains the Bush administration's biggest challenge and all its senior figures have been brought out to defend the policy as public support for the war continues to slide.
Mr Cheney said that the threat of terrorism would be removed as people in Iraq and the wider Middle East took control of their own lives.
But he added, in a direct appeal to the American people, that like other great duties in history, it would require decades of patient effort.
'Civil war'
The vice president insisted that progress was being made in training up Iraq's own security forces, though he did not indicate how long US forces would remain.
President Bush has promised that America will stay on the offensive to prevent insurgents from disrupting next week's referendum on Iraq's new constitution.
But as the number of US military personnel killed rises towards 2,000, the grumblings are getting louder.
In a letter to President Bush, Democrat senators have warned that continuing on the same path in Iraq could lead to a full-blown civil war.

Is 7 billion $ a month sustainable for decades?
Then again what should he care about the cost; Cheney's "old" companies Halliburton and KPR bill the gov't for hundreds of millions of $ of that every year. |

The cold war went on for 50 years .
There wouldn't be any war if the Bathists , Khomeni lovers and Bin Laden followers gave up their war. |

Not that he'd ever give up his precious bodily fluids. |

The Bobster loves it when Cheney talks like that, Americans were willing to supoort this war at the start because they thought it would be quick and easy, just like Washington told them. It's not, and the longer we saty the worse it will get.
Did Vietnam make our country better? I don't recall it that way. In fact, I have trouble thinking of any single tangible benfit to our country that came in return for the tens of thousands of our slaughtered and the butchery done to our good reputation around the world as a result of it.
I can see nothing different ahead about this.
Fortunately Cheney's big mouth will have an effect - the numbers in support or tacit approval of the Iraq Adventure will continue to plummet. |

Seoul and Busan have elections today. HCMC (formerly Saigon) does not. Yes, and we have a military presence in this part of the world, but not in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh had support of the peasants in the countryside ... the differences go on and on.
Why did you ask such a silly question? |

I'd still like to know if anyone thinks 7 billion $ a month is sustainable for decades of war. |

No, but I'm wondering what the alternatives are.
It's a shame (well, more than a shame really, I don't think I can find strong enough words) that Iraq became connected with the War on Terror/Al Qaeda in the minds of the Bush administration (or more harshly, that the Bush administration used the attack on the WTC as an excuse for furthering a long-desired agenda in Iraq) but the damage has been done.
Certainly fighting terrorism for the next few decades (at least) is not an unreasonable statement, but some important questions:
Is Cheney's estimate one of occupying Iraq for the next few decades?
Does leaving Iraq a mess mean that the US is caving in to Al Qaeda? |

Bob you are really desperate.
What was the difference between US participation in the Korean war and the Vietnam war? |

Exactly..... they are replaced as the main governing body while they are opposed by US soldiers, yet continue to rule the countryside. As soon as Western military presence is removed, they will cut the head of the interm government, and return to power.... The Russians couldn't beat them and they virtually closed off the country and killed with a lot more impunity than the US will be allowed to do... the insurgency here will last as long as there are Afghans that can pick up weapons... the same could be said for Iraq, and what ever comes after that... |
