I am going to visit the States in December, and want to take my external hard drive. How do security and customs deal with this? I'm thinking of the fact that a laptop has to be booted up to prove that it is a computer. How do they check a hard drive?

I brought mine through in checked baggage, not carry on.
The issue never came up.

Same here: computer too - much too much of a pain to keep having to boot it, and less to carry.
