My buddy just came back from Nova Scotia and he said smokes
there were $11.00 a pack! Focking unbelievable!! Where does
this money go? We pay for our own health care, pension and UI.
So, it must be sprayed out to welfare scum. I am so glad I live
here and don't have my hard earned cash pilfered by crooked
lefty politicians. Makes me sick!

If you're going to smoke and get lung cancer and suck up the health care system's money, then you should pay for it in taxes! The best thing the Canadian government ever did was raise taxes on smoke. It gives people some incentive to quit and young kids can't afford to start.

I think if you smoke you should have to pay for any smoking
related illnesses by yourself. I don't think the gov't should raise
taxes. I like money-grubbing bureaucrats to keep their filthy
commie hands off my dough. Time to wake up and
take responsibility for yourself, NOT raise taxes.

I know exactly what you mean.

Yeah, the tax situation in Canada is ridiculous. However, the single largest expenditure is STILL interest on the debt (wasn't the GST supposed to solve that?) - a debt that was largely run up by right wing governments giving massive bonuses, tax breaks, and bail out payments to poorly run, economically inefficient compananies just because they were Canadian.

EI payments take up 8% of every tax dollar. That should be stopped right now. Why exactly are we paying people to not work, removing any incentive to move some place where there are jobs!!!!!??

nice to know you're up on your logic....

by dying early smokers actually lower the insurance premium for everyone since they pay into it, but are not around to cash in once they get really sick as old people. they are too busy rotting. plus, insurance is higher for smokers. check any economics website that speaks on this matter and they will basically say the same thing.

the worst thing any country does is raise taxes on ANYTHING as it has unintended consequences that are usually negative. it is not up to canada or whoever to act as our mommies and tell us what we can and cannot put into our bodies. The whole schpiel with 'the kids', Mrs. Lovejoy, is ridiculous, as they have mommies of their own. There is too much emphasis on the government, especially in Canada, to parent the people.

And third, there was funding for the Canada Revenue Agency, which administers the federal tax system (and also collects personal income taxes for all provinces except Quebec). Its operations cost about $5.3 billion, or 3 cents of each tax dollar.

Holy cow, does that not seem high??

Yeah, especially since it's largely electronic now (e-filing, etc).

There is a demonstrable inverse correlation between the cost of cigarettes and the number of people who start or continue smoking. A hundred dollars a pack is fine with me if it would keep people from starting.

IMHO

Oh, and I don't know anyone who smokes cigarettes who would not like to quit. (Smoking an occasional Cohiba is a different story. Cool ) They should at least appreciate that a high cost may keep others from starting, and give them a better incentive to quit. On the other hand, I have read here on the board that the low cost of cigarettes here has caused some people to start up their habit again.

I am sympathetic to those who have the smoking habit- it is hard to break. Maybe the high cost is the incentive you need.
