O.K. This isn't really a ballad, more of a rant.
I'm getting pretty tired of all the slagging on Foreign (particularily Canadian) ESL teachers (instructors, facilitators, what have you) from the Korean and Foreign media, other members of the board, and the Korean public in general.
I'm told "I can't get a real job back home", when in reality, I had a real stressful job back home (union organizer). That job, too, was not really related to my degree, yet I did that well enough. Sure, I'm not trained in education, but anyone who couldn't teach after being here five years is a moron. As well, some of the most successful people in their respective fields haven't had any 'formal training'.
The reason I'm here, simply put, is that I can pay off a huge student loan in a fraction of the time I could back home, as well as enjoying life to an extent that my friends and family back home couldn't dream of. I'm 32 years old, have an insured car, two insured motorcycles, three months PAID vacation (in which I can travel to various interesting and beautiful countries), a light teaching schedule which leaves me with time to study and go to the gym, a fiancee (who speaks three languages), and a fairly nice pad with all the ammenities of home (more in fact, because I could never afford a computer or a PS2 back home). I have time to delve in hobbies (travel, writing, sketching and painting), and I still see something which blows my mind every week or so. Hell, My old man has worked for the federal government for 30 years, and he doesn't have half the time off that I have. He has one car and one motorbike, and a huge mortage. Not to mention taxes, which I also pay a fraction of over here. Am I stupid? I don't think so. Am I laid back? Sure, but I'm no slave to the so called 'protestant work ethic'. I sleep fine at night.
AND I"M STILL MANAGING TO PAY OFF MY HUGE 20,000 STUDENT LOAN (which is now down to a quarter of the original level)!!
All the haters who say shizznit like: "You can't get a job in your home country" probably had mommy and daddy to pay for their school. Come on, most Koreans who level this crap at us are from well off backgrounds. The less well off Koreans have treated me with nothing but respect, and usually understand my situation.
To all the haters... kiss my arse!! I'm tired of hearing your shizznit. In the immortal words of Wil Smith: "Don't hate the player, hate the game."
(I'm not really sure who this is directed to. All those who agree with me, please give some props. We aren't burnouts.)
Peace
(unless you ain't down. If you ain't down you can go screw yourself.)

Today at least ...
... I'm happy in what I do. And that's what counts. And it's down to me how much satisfaction I get from this job. And that counts for even more. |

So, I'm a loser because I worked my ass off to pay off my student loans, loans that I didn't need to take because my parents had enough money to support my brother and I through university? If that's the case, then I guess I must be a real loser for having paid off my loans in less than 3 years while saving up enough money to attend grad school.
If the guys flinging the insults weren't such mamma's boys, I might actually feel insulted for a second.
PS. Isn't it ironic that we are losers for coming here, yet many Koreans want to emmigrate? |

That's the thing. They're acknowledging that they want to take a step up and think we've taken a step down. |

| I kind of regret responding to this thread. All of these threads are nonsense, same as the complaints. People shouldn't allow bogus arguments to get to them. |

They want to emmigrate, and yet they don't (remember, "Pusan is very far from Seoul"). It takes courage to establish yourself halfway around the world, no matter your origin, destination or lenght of stay. Koreans who have lived abroad tend to understand this. |

Damn where is a mod when you need it for an obvious slur like the word, "Wetback".
If I dare to even mutter the word, "Rice Nigger" in the general direction of anyone in particular I would be flogged. |

A wetback is a racial slur aimed at people who come from Mexico to work in the US
It's supposed to be like you're wet from being in the Rio Grande or whatever that river is called
I dunno if that guy is serious, and if he is, he probably just couldn't understand what the OP wrote.. haha, I don't think it's worth getting riled up about |
