I have dated a few KGs and they all say "I love You"
the first time. I'm sure they don't mean it. Or maybe
they don't understand it. Of course I have to say it
back, or my evening will be....shall we say...incomplete.

The strange thing is they might break up a week later for
the stupidest reason. I wonder if when Korean couples
say "I love you" to each other, if it has the same lack
of commitment.

I've been told 'I love you' a few times by female students.

I don't think it has the same meaning at all.

On my birthday, one of my youngest students (an 8 year old boy) gave me a hand made birthday card. It read:
Dear teacher,
Happy Birthday
I love you so much

The thing was his parents had probably helped him write it. They dont have a clue as to the meaning of half the English words they use here. Another example is a middle school boy, on discovering I had taken my summer vacation in Japan said:
"Teacher, I dont like Japan. They are very, very f/u/c/k! Shocked

My Mum was a primary school teacher in England for years- every Christmas she'd get cards written by 8 year olds boys and girls saying
"I love you Swiss James's Mum!"

I don't think it's a language thing, just kids

back to the OPI think, from what I have heard from friends and through basic observations, that the concept of love here is a little bit different. This is probably due to the fact that the way people find boyfriends and girlfriends is different (online, blind dates), and that they also start dating and developing socially at a MUCH OLDER age. Therefore, your girlfriends may be in the junior high stage where you want quick romantic love and they say I love you even if it has no meaning, and think nothing of breaking up with you. There seems to be more emphasis on romance, especially from what I see on TV and movies, than on true love and sticking with someone when there are down and out. Perhaps, if you want a relationship with a mature Korean woman, you can call up HwajangshilAjumma.

yes, koreans (men and women) are very quick to say "i love you." but one thing i've discovered is that korean women won't have sex unless they hear "i love you." (on a tangent: this is something that has been uncovered by many foreigners (one of whom i met). they use this technique to get a woman into bed and break her heart 1 week later).

maybe when the girls tell you they love you, it's because everyone else is so quick to say it. it's become part of the social code, which makes it harder to decipher how genuine it is. there are, fortunately, other ways to tell if a girl really loves you....but you should probably just say you love her too. maybe if you want to say it and really mean it you should say it in korean: saranghaeyo.

: )

Just kids..... no. I also remember a guy in the Red Mango, (yoghurt shop) in Busan also saying:
I love you so much
(He was early twenties)
All I did was order yoghurt!!!!!!!!!!!

Also every middle school girl I see:
I love you so much
and the classic
You very handsome

I live in a very small town.............

Somewher along the line they are being taught this.

I think it's when you hear "I'm in love with you" that you should be concerned. There's a difference.

Been breaking many innocent girls' hearts? <sardonic raised eyebrow emoticon>

I've personally neither met nor heard of any foreigners deliberately using this line to get into a girl's pants. Like billybrobby said, it's not like you have to anyway.

You're not a Korean ajossi are you?

"I love you so much" is some line some singer or some such said. "I love you so much, follow me in my heart."

It was fun to teach the kids at the last school my variant: "I love you so much, follow me in my butt."
