that being said, yes they are safe. don't hear about many boeing 737s crashing now do you?

Sure they're safe; unless there's say a bomb that's been surreptitiously placed on board OR some shadowy agency deploys GLOBAL HAWK technology to override manual systems, essentially taking control of the aircraft.
