I guess I'll wait and see how the iPod looks playing widescreen video. I would mostly use it for watching TV shows though. Watching a movie with great visuals and audio deserves a large screen HDTV and surround sound with subwoofer. Watching a UMD or divx movie on the PSP looks alright but nothing spectacular.

This is a nice alternative to the video Ipod.

I've actually got one already, and it kicks ass. I got the 30 gig version with the 30 hour battery. I got it mostly for music, but I also watch the occasional sitcom on it. It works really well. Yes, the screen is on the small side, but this little baby does pretty much everything, and most people agree that the sound quality is better than the Ipod. What I really, really like is that the X5 plays pretty much every type of audio file there is, including FLAC up to compression level 7 or something like that.

On the other hand, if you want a dedicated portable video player, Cowon also makes the A2.

Either one of these is better, in my opinion, than the Ipod. But then, I generally don't like Apple anyway, so I'm biased.

That player is just shyte... it's at least 12 quarters behind everything else on the PMP market right now. With a mere 2 hours of juice available for video playback, the WORST video codec support, a tiny 2.5" screen at a resolution of only 320x120 *scoff*, and not a single feature that sets it apart from any other player around, there's no way you can compare the "cog-wheel" to any other PMP/PVP.

Sorry to tell you elric but you and the cult of mac know crap all about the pmp market as it stands to date. If you are going to point out the strengths of the iPod video, you will have to do better than stating that it is small, sleak, and of Macintosh make. BTW, the PSP isn't a true PMP either.

To borrow a simpsons analogy - I really think that Steve Jobs is the 'wallet inspector' and there are alarming numbers of Homers out there ready to fork over their hard-earned cash for 'inspection'.

Why is apple so cool anyway ? Yes, they're not microsoft ... I get it. But apart from that, what's the deal ??

i'm thinking about getting either the A2 or v43. i'm leaning towards the A2 because of the support it will have in the USA. also, it is able to record from a video source.
