Its just my opinion of course and I'm just a guy but hey, Shakespere never got a Nobel. Shakespere wrote plenty but thats the problem. Its too much.

Steinbeck can make me bawl and his documentation of American linguistics makes it all hit home. "Of Mice and Men" is a skinny little book about two oafs but its genius in its clarity and proof that less is more is one of the best philosphies ever.

Its too bad Steinbeck gets relgated to Eng Lit courses which makes it bad medicine to most people but many of his novels as well as "The Treasure of
Sierra Madre" are suprisingly modern. They read ike a drink of pure fresh cool water.

I think he's excellent as well, but I'm surprised that someone who's read "Grapes of Wrath" could have the same opinions on immigration as you do!

Oakie dokey (see what I did there?)

Anyway he's great, I just wish he'd written more- actually I don't know why he didn't, have no idea about the actual guy's life

Tortilla Flats is a favorite of mine, but of mice and men brings a tear to my eye everytime I read it.

Still Henry the 5th inspires me to greater heights everytime I read it for some odd reason.

I'm partial to East of Eden, but Grapes is still my favorite.

I like Steinbeck, but I don't think he's the greatest English (language) writer.

My vote is for Mark Twain. Amusing and insightful. Cool

Wha? The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was written by B. Traven, and later turned into a classic film by John Huston.

Yes, The Treasure of Sierra Madre was not written by Steinbeck.

I was prepping for a trip to Mexico and my guidebook said I should read it. I always dismissed it because I thought the language would be archaic and I thought the book would be "preachy". It read very smoothly and I read it all in one afternoon at the poolside of a border motel pool while I waited for my truck's customs paperwork to be processed. I also understand Traven's work is interpreted since he writes in German.

I expected something very different in both cases.
