I recently watched his movie Bad Guy (�� ). It was alright-- but one of those indie movies where people make choices that make no sense and you never learn why they did it. If anyone can explain to me why the woman chose what she chose please enlighten me.

Anyway, he's supposed to be one of Korea's best directors. What I mainly remember from the interview segment on the Bad Guy DVD was how much sounded like he was just talking out of his ass.

His early films are utter crap - violent, misogynistic, amateur (THE ISLE, BAD GUY, THE COAST GUARD and the worst of the lot ADDRESS UNKNOWN). Since then, however, he seems to have matured, and SPRING SUMMER FALL WINTER...AND SPRING is excellent, and SAMARIA and 3-IRON are solid.

I watched this film the other day on TV without English subtitles and it is kind of hard to figure out why. I loved the movie anyway, more than Spring, Summer....

I think maybe she did it because it is not so easy to come back from being a prostitute to noramal life, maybe she saw that her previous life wasn't so great, and she saw that the bad guy loved her a lot after all.

But she tried to go back to her family the first time she escaped (and if she had tried to lay low for a bit first or bummed a ride to a different city she would have gotten away).

And yeah, obviously we're supposed to believe they love each other. And granted there are some twisted loves out there. But if you had heard of this as a true story would you have thought, "Huh, they must be in love." Maybe it could be Stockholm Syndrome. But I don't think we're supposed to think so.

I think this is a case of someone writing a nonsensical script and then saying, "Well if you don't get it then you just don't understand the true complexity of life."

hmm...

This is far and away may favorite Korean movie. Right after Wild Orchid for all time favs. So that might tell you something about the film. Umm... I've seen this movie maybe 8 times, once with English subtitles. It doesn't seem so unrealistic to me. Rather it's dead on realistic. I very much identify with the "bad man." It lacks something that Zalman King has, but.... I don't know, when one is all messed up, one makes messed up choices.

hater depot, i totally agree... �� is so over-rated. his films are full of vague stabs at profundity, so whenever i had the misfortune to see one of them (usually dragged along by someone who thinks the man's a genius) my friend will ask, 'didn't you get the meaning of it then?' as though i were an idiot.. and i'm just like, 'yeah, of course i 'got it', but it was still a load of bovine excrement.' (can't say bullsh1t here)

he labours the same points about life being dark and miserable again and again, without any balance or humour. add that to thick slabs of misogynism, pointless violence and a bizarre or idiotic plot and you have the basic foundation for any of his films.

there are so many good films coming out of korea right now that it's unbelievable this guy is practically the biggest director. ���!
