Again? Sorry, but could you post a link about when it was called Transylvania the first time? There is a small, private university near Lexington called that, but I'm not aware of the state ever having been named as such. |

I was pretty surprised at that too, but our Wikipedia just got up to cities in Kentucky and lo and behold, I found the words:

History
Kentucky is one of four states referred to as a commonwealth. Before the American War of Independence, this land was called Transylvania with its capital at Boonesborough. It was a major gateway for early migration to the west through the Cumberland Gap, and was the first major frontier developed west of the Appalachian Mountains. Guns enabled this movement westward, and even the term shotgun was first coined in Kentucky in 1776. After the war, it became Kentucky County, Virginia and ten constitutional conventions took place at the courthouse of Constitution Square in Danville between 1784 and 1792. In 1790, Kentucky delegates accepted Virginia's terms for separation and the state constitution was drafted at the final convention in April 1792. On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the fifteenth state in the union and Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero from Virginia, was named the first Governor of the Commonwealth Of Kentucky. |

At some point before statehood the eastern portion of Kentucky tried to become a state. The capital was named Franklin, in an effort to get Ben to support their statehood request. |

The name should remain "Kentucky" in deference to its collegiate athletic teams. However, "KFC" should be changed to "KFBF" to indicate "Kentucky Fried Bird Flu" - to clear up any health concerns about its products... |

I think any state beginning with "Ken" is a good thing.

Ya-Ta Boy, I think you are referring to Tennessee. What is now the eastern third of that state tried to join the Union as the State of Franklin prior to Tennessee's admission as a state in 1796, but it was vetoed by North Carolina, which wanted the area for itself. |
ah ha! Mr. andrew is right. I stand corrected. I must have been staring out the window when I should have been paying attention. |

So that's why that state never answered any of my questions about Old English. |

"Transylvania Colonel"?
"Transylvania Fried Chicken"?
Weren't the people in The Burbs from Transylvania? Who'd want to eat their chicken? |

Etymologically speaking it's not such a bad name:
trans - "across", "beyond", "through"
silva - "forest", "woodland"
I think it translates into English as "The land across the forest" or "The land beyond the woodlands".
I'm assuming "Pennsylvania" translates as "(William) Penn's Forest" or something along those lines. |
