|

This may sound silly but does anyone know if it's possible to connect a chassis fan directly to the power supply in a computer. I have a bunch of old hard disks and an empty case with a power supply in it. I'm thinking of loading the disks into the drive bays and connecting them to my main machine via IDE to USB adapters. I'm worried about cooling so I thought if I could connect the chassis fan directly to the power supply that would solve the problem. Thanks in advance for any help. |

PM Demophobe as I'm sure he's done this before. |

no problem connecting conventional 'chassis' fans to PC power supply
but try to get them acting in concert - you don't want two opposing fans blowing in air
you have a choice of 2 voltages from the voltages available (5, 12). 5v is too low for a 12v fan, but from across the 5v and 12v you can 7v which is enough to turn most fans, albeit more slowly than a 12v connection.
check your MOBO - newer models have connectors for additional fans |
