|

Right now there are three French movies on Korean t.v.: channels CGV, XTM and MBC Movies.
It's nice to listen to the sounds of the language for a change and see the settings and scenery of France.
But I wonder if its a growing trend, or whether its typical of this time slot. You see, I don't usually have the t.v. on at this time. It's 3:20 a.m.
I recall being surprised at the lack of European programming on Korean television when I first came to this country, especially given many locals are fascinated with the dream of travelling Europe. And given the fact that all non-Korean movies would be subtitled anyways, so it wouldn't matter what foreign language was being shown I thought.
But then again, I was also surprised to see so few Australian films here. I somehow thought they'd be more prevalent than the American-backed Canadian productions that litter the movie channels here inbetween Hollywood busts and blockbusters.
Uh,... wait a second. One of three French films is now showing a sex scene. Ah yes. The French! Now I understand why Koreans show French films late at night. Though these films are about much more than just that, deep and introspective as they tend to be. |

| I remember a lot of German sex comedies being on on Saturday mornings. The first time I saw one I couldn't figure out if they were speaking English... same speech patterns and inflections. Took me 5 minutes to figure it out. |

They were mainstream French films, one with Sophie Marceau, another with Emmanuelle Beart.
Anyways, that was then. Probably was just a coincidence, like when I see three Meg Ryan movies on at the same time, or three Nic Cage flicks... either coordinated or competitive programming is going on on Korean t.v., or else just numerous coincidences. |
