Sometimes friends are totally useless buggers. I am going to do the hermit thing for awhile.

Friends can only love us as much as they can. It isn't always as much as we want. It isn't their fault.

On the other hand, friends can be treacherous bast...inados.

Friends can problematical because they have different, hidden agandas and objectives to your own. Friends are two people that have something to benefit from eachother. A temporary alliance.
As for weyguks in Korea, they can be a treacherous gang of backstabbers. You only have to throw a couple of pretty K-gals into a group of weyguk guys to see them turn into a pack of dog-eat-dog sharks. Something about korea: expats look after their own interests as a priority, way more than in the west.

Weird discussion. I have a number of friends that are so close to me we treat each other as if we were one person. If I have money and they don't it's theirs, and if the opposite happens it's mine. We sometimes hang out for a whole day without saying anything except what comes to mind, and any conversation besides that is unneeded. In Korea I have a number of people that are close to that level, but not quite.

This is wrong when talking about the kind of friends I'm speaking of.

They are few and far between. M'thinks that the term is not done justice; slung about much too easily. A lot like, "I love you." While not a Christian any longer, I was when the following sappy, but accurate lyrics were produced. And if that ain't what you expect from a "friend", why are you calling them that?

Friends are Fiends Forever

Michael W. Smith

Packing up the dreams God planted
In the fertile soil of you
I can't believe the hopes He's granted
Means a chapter of your life is through

But we'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends

And with the faith and love God's given
Springing from the hope we know
We will pray the joy you live in
Is the strength that now you show

We'll keep you close as always
It won't even seem you've gone
'Cause our hearts in big and small ways
Will keep the love that keeps us strong

And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends

And friends are friends forever
If the Lord's the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never
'Cause the welcome will not end
Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends

To live as friends

Though it's hard to let you go
In the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends

No a lifetime's not too long
To live as friends

By and large they're time-draining attention-whores with no sense of imposition.

But they're good for laughs and coffee.

No he is 100% correct. You may not be getting a benefit in money or in a physical object, but you are getting some kind of emotional benefit from being with them.

What he's wrong about is the temporary aspect. I'm well aware of how selfishness works (see Anthony de Mello).

Friends. How many of us have them? Friends. Ones we can depend on. Friends. How many of us have them? Friends. Before we go any further, lets be...Friends.

In Melbourne I worked with a millionaire who had built his own business from scratch. A fair and good boss. Struck me as bizarre when one day he said
"Friends? ahh I learned my lesson a long time ago. There's no such thing. Its always for a reason. They always want something."

Over the years this has often proved true.

They don't call me "R" teacher for nothin' - Take the "r" out of "friends" and whadya get - a bunch of stinkin' FIENDS, that's what. Mad

"Red" had the right idea, but he didn't complete the thought: "...I am a rock, I am an island, I am ... Dokdo!" Confused

Don't be misled by bad psychic-networking singer's (Dionne Warwick) sentimental song ("That's What Friends Are For..." ) To keep the TV show "Friends" on the air the last couple years they had to pay all the actors a million bucks an episode each - and still it came to a disappointing end - like all material relationships... Sad
