If you can get Discovery Channel, you might be interested in watching this doco...
Premieres on October 26 at midnight
Encores October 27 at 8am and 4pm and October 31 at 6am
Since the end of World War II, Seoul has sacrificed much in the race to become one of Asia��s most affluent societies. Today, this vibrant, hip city seeks to remedy this through a garagantuan infrastructure project: the restoration of Cheonggyecheon, an ancient water way which once ran through the heart of Seoul connecting it to a vast mountain range on the outskirts of the city. You might have noticed that when they first started running the ads they noted that "this program is brought to you in part by.............." not sure the exact wording but they flash up the Hi Seoul logo. I found that interesting. Looks like a cool show though

| It starts midnight tonight (Wednesday). It'll be worth a look. Arirang already ran a documentary on this. I wonder if it'll be the same one but with a different voice-over? |

anyway about this show...just casually hearing the ad while i was doing the dishes led me to deduce that it was about seoul. i don't know any other country so obsessed with the past and tradition that they would blow up a highway and dig up an 'ancient stream.'
ancient stream. that did it for me. how dorky. i also doubt its going to look like the CGI model...or if it does, that it won't turn into the abomination that are the rest of the streams here in a month or so...soju bottles and cig butts abound.
i definitely watch it though...it definitely seems like a better option than yet another episode of "The Bachelor" or "The Cut" (Which SUCKS!) |

Obssessed with the past? Then, why did Koreans over the last 30 years or so, destroy huge numbers of historical buildings in their quest for economic growth.
I think the stream is a great idea. Certainly better than an elevated concrete motorway running through the city, and the major also has other plans for making Seoul a more habitable place, including increasingly the number of urban parks. |

i'm interested to watch it, but as someone mentioned, it is sponsored by the city of seoul, which could mean trouble.
i recently watched a show on cheongyecheon called ȯ�潺��� (sp?) (environmental special), a korean program which actually gave a very well-balanced view on the project. in short - good idea, bad planning. the goverment wanted construction too fast (seoul mayor is running in presidential election in two years) and pretty much ignored suggestions/advice from academics and environmental groups.
don't know what kind of problems to expect, but two the show highlighted were flooding and water quality. upstream, it's fed by the han river and the the water quality is only good enough for carp. downstream it gets better and you can find other fish, but in small quantities because the stream isn't natural.....no weedy shallows with slow currents for fish to rest in.
anyway, i have a feeling the show tonight is going be a joke, but i'm gonna watch it anyway. |

yeah i think the stream is great too and i agree its better than whatever concrete POS they had there...but to argue that korea is not obsessed with the past because they tore down some (probably shabby-ass) old buildings doesn't hold much water. ever heard the hatred spewed from a bunch of 7 year olds about japan? how about going on about so and so inconsequential fuedal dynasties? how about the word 'traditional' being used to describe a freaking TOILET? How about that infamous Incheon statue?
It is OBSESSED with the past and previous slights...come ON! |

| It may be obsessed about past slights and perceived 'injustices', but it seems to also have a contradictory lack of respect for much of its own history and a bizarre obsession with anything deemed 'new' or 'modern'. I just thought your reaction was a little too cynical. |

it was probably cynical because i love slamming S.Korea.
Honestly.
it makes me really happy and leaves the rest of my non-PC day to be enjoyed stress-free.
i do see your point about the dichotomy of living in the past and the future...i guess i would describe it as 'historically resentful' and 'materialisticly (?) progressive."
i didn't see the show, btw...will probably catch it at some point.
Is it worth seeing? I don't think I could stand to watch the HiSeoul people just narrate themselves a big cultural hand job about this accomplishment. Or is it just a cool documentary like most of the ones on Discovery? |

I fell asleep. Yeah. Half of the documentary was actually paid for by the Seoul government. So it was going to be a tongue in ass production. |
