Coming up my elevator going home last night, I caught a look at myself in the mirror. I don't remember being this fat! It really was shocking. And I still have 8 more Krispy Kremes in the fridge. I decided to give them away and go on a diet. But how do I do that in Korea. I know it should be easy, but can anyone offer some good advice??? Never done one before, just played sports to stay in shape. Any help would be much appreciated |

I'm on Herbalife these days. It works pretty well when I stick to it. I get it from a distributor in NZ, but I know there are distributors in Korea too (though the product is made to suit Korean tastes and Westerners often don't like it). |

First take the stairs instead of the elevator I'm pretty active here and this is really the first time I've not really had to watch what I eat. The subway is a good 20 minute walk from my apartment and I happily walk that every day. That helps. I don't take cabs or the bus (unless it's really Jesus cold). I go running twice a week. Weekends I like to walk around a lot, exploring Seoul.
I rarely ever drink. If you're suddenly a big drinker in Korea, that can do it. A beer isn't short on calories. Add in the anju, nachos, etc...
So. If you drink, cut out the drinking. If you eat fast food, limit it to once a week. Is this the first time you've really had a good amount of disposable income? I remember back in the mid 90s when the Internet was heating up and I was making money hand over fist writing for publishers, magazines, and newspaper about the Internet, I totally ballooned. Suddenly I was in front of my computer, writing, and I had all the money in the world to order as much pizza as I wanted... |

I lost 10 pounds in the last 6 weeks just by cutting out the eating after 6 pm. I was exercising as well, but I really feel that just stopping eating at night really kicked up the weight loss. I'm a night snacker, and by just eliminating that possiblity, it helped me get my calories down to a reasonable level. I did allow myself a small bowl of jello or a frozen "pop" ( not sure what to call them- not really ice cream, more popsicle-like) in the eve. For this reason, I didn't have to "strictly" diet in the daytime, and so I didn't feel deprived.
I also have to rave about the fitness program I'm using which Dave's poster Demonicat introduced me to. It's a personal training software program called Yourself fitness! Nothing has ever kept me so motivated, and it has been the number one factor for lifestyle change for me. The trainer is female, so if you're male, you may feel a little dorky ( I'm female), but the workouts challenge, and the trainer chews you out for missing a workout You also get to unlock new music and virtual workout environments as you rack up the workouts. The website is
http://www.yourselffitness.com/ . It's not available for purchase in Korea but you should be able to download quite easily. |

Thanks for the help everyone. The stair thing might kill me though, I live on th 18th floor. I started running and cut out fast food two days ago and I feel so much better already. I will check out this fitness thing, but I have never done anything like it. So, it should be interesting. Thanks again |

I eat Korean food. No junk, I try to minimize that.
The yourselffitness I can vouch for I lost 14 pounds in 2 months.
I have lost so far about 35 pounds in Korea. |

Vegetables and fruit are your very good friends. Eat more of those than anything else every day and you'll lose weight. |

My big weakness is ice-creama nd over the summer I went a little OTT,s o some winter I found some of my clothes were a little tight. This for me is a lose weight or freeze situation so I'm on a semi-atkins at the moment, cutting out the white carbs.
So for breakfast I changed my bagel or toast to fat-free yoghurt.
Lunch I've cut the white rice and stick to the side dishes, though the teachers at my school chide me for not eating right but being fat at the same time.
Dinner no potatoes or white rice anymore. I'm trying to limit my pasta by cutting what I'd normally eat into thirds. I eat two that night then use the last third as a side dish the next. If I have a hamburger, I ditch the bun and add more vegetables.
Orange juice and cola have been changed to milk and water.
But the biggest thing I've done is started snacking more frequently on fruit and vegetables. I have a snack at about 11 and another at 3 of apples or carrots or celery. I find that I'm less hungry.
Things are all most back to where I was pre-icecream summer binge and I can lose a few pounds over the winter. |

CLG i know where you're coming from....the ice cream here is incredible...
ive never had such cheap, yet high quality quickiemart treats. it is by far and large, in my opinion, south korea's saving grace and greatest accomplishment.
has anyone tried the new chocolate fudge one? its incredible and only
o-beg! |

oh! and to the diet person...
lift weights...you may not loose weight but you will look so much better. Plus muscle burns a lot more calories when being used than fat does, so you can probably only slightly modify your diet...or even keep it the same and still see results. If you are a dude, then this will work 100%...if you're a chick just cut down on drinks and desserts.
BTW, until i started reading this board I didn't know dudes cared so much about their bodies and being in shape. I don't think its something you talk about in front of us ladies. |

Whomever said the thing about not eating after 6pm was absolutely right. I lost 1 kilo in a week by doing that. Just remember....muscle burns more than fat. I would say....to start off lightly:
Start lifting weights 3 times a week.
The other two.....walk somewhere for at least 40 minutes 3 times a week.
Stop eating after 6pm.
This in itself will drop your weight drastically if you are overweight to obese; lightly if you are normal to overweight and are looking to trip up. Hope this helps. |
