I brought in some photos that my parents mailed me of my grandaparents' new home in Tennessee. It's a rather small home by US stanards, and was built about 50 years ago, but every person I showed the photos to wanted to know if my grandparents are rich.

It really made me feel bad, knowing that US-style homes and yards are virtually impossible in Korea. I decided to keep the photos to myself after that.

yeh... so today i had a phonics class of 6yr olds... and they're crawling all over me, ones on my back messing up my hair, two are in my pockets grabbing for pens and markers to write on the board, three are in my face trying to get me to say korean words, another two are arm wrestling me at the same time... having a good old time until i try to get them all back into their seats to start the lesson, whereupon they all start whining...

so i stick out my finger, put it to my temple and move it around in circles.. the "crazy" motion, and then point at all them... they all laugh, and then one of the cutest little girls in the entire world starts sobbing, just utterly sobbing. wouldn't talk to me, wouldn't look at me for the rest of the hour, which i mostly spent apologizing and trying to do stupid things to myself to make her laugh... really felt bad, but not quite as bad as when i took my littlest cousin of the age of 8 to see santa. she was being a typical 8 yr old, climbing all over me, etc, and i said, jokingly, if you dont start being good, santa won't bring you any presents.... oh boy.. niagra fucking falls right in the middle of the mall and every single parent looking at me like i was satan. lol

Yeah, I've told my students about my mom's house by the sea. Just so it sank in how an apartment will never compete, I tell them about how she could probably have lobster everyday of the year for the rest of her life and not pay one cent (I teach older students). What happens is that tons of lobster will wash ashore during storms in the winter. The lobster freeze to death, so picking them isn't considered poaching. Last time it happened, they had to bring in a truck to clean the beach.

Oh yay, frozen crustaceans on the shore, an elderly couple or two to share them with and probably a 10-minute drive to the nearest store. Give me a 12-pyung apartment in Cheongdamdong any day.

Each to their own of course, but the feeling I get when I imagine living there is about as far from envy as it can get. Wink

10 minutes drive is nothing when you aren't doing it in Korea. I really don't see any advantage in living near a Korean grocery store, which are little more than aisle upon aisle of the same old boring stuff: kimchi, ramen, chapchea noodles, seaweed, etc.

Well, the best part of living in the city is not the convenience stores.

...After visiting relatives living near the Hamptons in Long Island, I brought back a couple magazines showcasing some beach estates and palacial mansions that filthy rich Americans reside in. Of course, I told the students that the most spectacular place was my house on the ocean - and that one of the stunning young supermodels in a jewelry ad was my older sister...

If I want to flat-out deflate their national pride, I ask them to find and circle South Korea on a globe. When students razz me for having hairy arms, I tell them that all real men have hair on their arms - and not much on their head ...

Tease is such a nice, happy word. I prefer: belittle, torment and denigrate.

I like to do so right up to the point their soul leaves their body, rendering them listless peons ready to do my bidding.

. . .insert Pink Floyd's "we don't need no education" here. . .

I remember back in the hogwon days.
One kid came in with an eye patch. the next day another kid drew a picture of a cyclops. He then started calling the kid cyclops. One-eyed kid got pissed.

About 4 or 5 months later...the teasing kid got an eye patch. (KArma...irony? Whatever)

So I start calling that kid cyclops and the next day his father's in there yelling at me.

Cyclop's father is angry.
