Anyone check it out yet?
http://earth.google.com/
A few friends of mine were talking about it.. supposedly the technology is incredibly advanced and connected to satelites.. you can even put in your home address back at home.. and you can see your own house location.. cars that might be in the driveway.. etc.
Real surreal.. I'm downloading it now.. and see if its really what I heard about. Even heard you can view current events such as New Dehli's bombed buildings, earthquakes after affects, etc.
Anyone else check it out before? |

I swear, it's things like this that lead to giant pink rabbits in high places.
You watch, it'll only go downhill from there. |

I tried it out but couldn't find anything interesting. I remember 5 years ago a satelite photos website showed my house, totally recognizable. But with Google Earth, maybe I'm an idiot, but I couldn't get jack to show up. |

It's not "live" it's a collection of satelite images placed on top of a 3D globe. To get the most current versions, with the bombed buildings, you have to update. |

it's still pretty sweet though, I could find my apartment building and office in Korea, the offices where I work in Manchester, my parents house etc.
It's great to be zoomed right in on your apartment in Korea, then hit a location back home and 'fly' all the way there in 10-20 seconds. |

Oh, that wasn't what I meant. I tried to look at location in Seoul but all that happened as I zoomed was the 5-mile map got bigger and blockier. Plus there was this black square that showed up whenever I zoomed in too far. |

I don't remember seeing any black squares?
Only central Seoul is in enough detail to check out individual buildings, but finding my place was pretty straightforward- plus I work at the airport, so finding that was again no sweat.
My friend was pretty mad that Ilsan just looked like brown countryside though. |

I could find my Seoul apartment as well.. saw the roof and the entire area around it.
Regarding the black squares.. I saw those from a distance.. but once zoom into it, you'll get beyond it and get much more detailed. |

The free downlaod doesn't have detail for individual buildings everywhere. Seoul has an overlay that allows it, and Suwon and other parts of kyonggi-do as well. If it doesn't have a detail overlay, then depending on the set-up of your computer, the image starts to get blurrred at about 10 miles up. But still 60,000 feet up, the detail isn't that bad.
How do you update the program? |
